Regarding the enthusiasm for GiffGaff I really don't get it personally. I did a lot of work looking at all the options in January and I reckon the £10 per month Tesco Mobile 1 month contract deal with 500 minutes and 1Gb of data is actually a better bet if you only want to pay £10 per month.

The enthusiasm for GG is likely due to their referral scheme. It's impossible to mention GG on social media (or occasionally on here) without some halfwit begging you to use their referral link.

You make an interesting point about Ovivo charging £2.50/month - I would have been more than happy to pay that.

I'm in the process of deciding which direction to go. My sister has just joined GG, so she and I will get £5 if I join. Plus I'll get an additional £5 for submitting the Ovivo PAC. She's already ported her Ovivo number.

I couldn't see a better tariff with Tesco Mobile (LINK) on a 1 month contract. Think the only better offer was from TalkTalk Mobile (LINK) but that's only available to existing landline customers..

For me, GG's free 0800 calls are a perk, as are the free GG-GG calls for three months from the date of the previous top-up. That said, their goodybags are not particularly competitive. If Three hadn't axed their relationships with cashback sites their SIM Only plans would have been more competitive.

I thought they are broadband only? Do they offer calls and texts too?

No (this bit added because it needs to be 10 letters where 2 will do)
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

I have a question re. the GiffGaff offer - if you transfer to them with an Ovivo PAC code do you have to top up £10 to get the £5 bonus, or will you get a SIM with £5 preloaded before having to top up?

You have to top-up (activate) the sim with £10. Only after the Ovivo number has been ported will you get the £5.

If you were referred by someone you'll get that £5 straight after activation. Alternatively you can get £5 cashback via TCB/Quidco.
  • Well there does seem to have been an overwhelming silence by some of the biggest Ovivo fan boys since their SIM cards turned in to scrap metal.

Leaving aside that what is done can't be undone (even I didn't expect Ovivo to shut down but would not have been surprised had they introduced a minimum monthly fee or simply sold off their customers to another aspiring MVNO for whom 70,000 customers would have been a significant addition) I would have thought there was now a worthwhile discussion to be had about alternatives.

I would for instance be very interested in particular to know what Silk has replaced Ovivo with for a low cost access option to the Vodafone network
