Not a lot really. The real risk, as I see it, though, is that Ovivo will sell on all the email addresss they've harvested, leading to a huge spamfest.
No doubt we've all used 'special' email addresses, though...........:)
This is non-issue. The risk of this is zero.
Read Ovivo's Privacy Policy - the relevant section is below.
We use information held about you in the following ways:
To provide you with information, products or services that you request from us or which we feel may interest you
To carry out our obligations arising from any contracts entered into between you and us
To allow you to participate in interactive features of our service, when you choose to do so
To notify you about changes to our service
We may also use your data, to provide you with information about goods and services which may be of interest to you
By using the Service you consent to us using your information in this manner and if you disable any device to block receipt of such communication we shall be entitled to terminate the Service to you. Where required to maintain the integrity and quality of the Service we offer, we may disclose your information to Subsidiaries or Sub-Contractors. However we will not share your personal information for Marketing or Advertising purposes with any 3rd Parties, unless we have explicit permission from you to do so.
(My bolding.)
This means they can't sell your personal info to 3rd parties (without your explicit permission), so there is nothing to worry about.
Before signing up to Ovivo, I did check out their privacy policy and T&Cs.
It was always made clear that Ovivo could use your data to send you targeted ads. They are the main source of Ovivo's revenue.
However the Chief Exec stated publicly in a interview last year that texting or phoning people with advertising was not what they were about. They've honoured this totally thus far (in my experience). I've never received any text or phone calls with ads.
All you get from them are emailed "special offers" (adverts) which you don't have to read. You can always set a filter (on gmail and probably on other email systems) to filter out their emails to the waste bin if you wish. The latter should make no difference to Ovivo as they will be paid by the advertisers for delivering the emails - what happens to them after they arrive is irrelevant.
At some stage, they may also re-start the occasional adverts (which can skipped) when you browse the internet on your phone. I never found these a problem.
But they are very unlikely to start text or phone adverts, given what the Chief Exec said, and also because they would drive away customers (who don't mind the emails and internet ads).0 -
If they have they're not saying. However, T&Cs don't override UK Law. They still have the opt-out on the emails, but whats the point (apart from legally having to have it) if its ignored.
I added ovivo to my blocked email list.
Still a good service though and saving me money.
By signing up to Ovivo, you have accepted their T&Cs (including being sent targeted ads). If you decide to leave Ovivo for another provider then of course you can unsubscribe from the emails.
If you want to stay with Ovivo then you have to accept their emailed ads as per their T&Cs (although you can set up your email to filter them to the waste basket if you wish).0 -
I have no problems with a few marketing emails off Ovivo given what I get for free in return.
If other companies start spamming me I will block them not Ovivo0 -
DPA has lots to do with this.
Principle 4 states
"Personal data shall be accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date."
Having opted out, that data is accurate, changing that to opted inmeans its not
Principle 6
"Personal data shall be processed in accordance with the rights of data subjects under this Act."
Having opted-out of marketing by email this does NOT give ovivo the right to opt me back in. Thats why companies must have opt-outs on emails, comes under Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.
Checked my emails and vivos response to my opt-out is
"

[/FONT]Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.
\The dumbed down version, issued by the ICO states
"From 11 December 2003, the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 became law and two new rules came into force regarding email marketing.
1st Rule
• when they send marketing emails to you, the sender must not conceal their identity; and
• they must give you a valid address for opt-out requests
This rule actually applies to all marketing messages sent by electronic mail (see ‘electronic mail’ below), regardless of who the recipient is."0 -
Special emails may not help.....
Further threat is selling of all information for marketing purposes, as the T&Cs now state
9.2 No opt-out to receiving targeted marketing messages is available.................
9.5.6 Supplying selected and targeted marketing materials and media to you by web access, SMS, phone, e-mail or post
I think I'll have to see how far this goes before it becomes invasive.
Saying that I've moved house, can block selected SMS and numbers on my android, don't use their web access, and have blocked the e-mails.
Get with the spirit of Ovivo. You want a free service supported by ads, then the least you can do is accept the ads.
If we were all as officious as you, then you wouldnt have the free service at all.
You remind me of my miserable neighbour!!0 -
I think ohdearmy is a rep of the EE, vodafone, O2 conglomerate running scared of Ovivo!!!!
Or just a see you next tuesday!0 -
Don't see what all the fuss is about if you are not sure about it Don't use it simple
i think its a great thing that's happened because you are really getting some-thing for nothing if you don't use the allowance up
i have had it since it started and the only emails i have had is for my balance with a couple of adds on it... not had no text messages or phone calls.
Well done Ovivo

Thanks to HeronGull telling me about Ovivo, I have now got one of their sims and I am really looking forward to using them. I get loads of emails at the moment from umpteen different companies, which I filter out so having some more won't make any difference..
I am just waiting on the Unlock code from T-mobile so that I can put it into my phone..
I think the service will suit me to a tee... since I have a very low usage of a mobile.. so even if the company doesn't last for years, every month it does exist, it will save me money!
Cheers0 -
Lets see how this goes!0
