Right click 'My Computer' click on 'Properties' and there should be a 'Automatic updates' tab. click on that and click on 'Windows update site' if it appears.

I did all the @high priority@ automatic updates apart from this one:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB2481109)

    Which kept failing

but all the other 9 or so worked fine and updated well.

now the video on youtube is running fine and smooth in IE but not in firefox?

    Still no audio working.

I should add that i tried to download some of the "optional hardware" updates (there were 2)

    i selected this one:
SILICON INTEGRATED SYSTEMS CORP. - Video - SiS 650

and basically once it downloaded it asked me to restart the machine, and when i did it wouldnt let me back into windows giving me the blue error screen.

So i tried to find in safe mode and delete the file "sisgrv.dll" but i could onl find the files with this name dating back to 2005, probably when the machine was built. so i just went @last known good config@ and its now let me back in and all appears ok again...

Not sure if this is goign to effect what we are trying to do here, but thought i better mention it.

if you are still missing drivers in device manager, find the instance id of the missing devices from (device manager) and either google it, or post it

    device-instance-id.png

windows update misses out loads of drivers, especially sounds, graphics, and chipset.

thanks mate just did this came back with:

    display adapater: sis 650_651_m650_m652_740

    monitor: plug and play monitor

Under sound, video and game controllers:

    audio codecs: ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMACM
    legacy audio drivers: ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMDRV
    legacy video capture devices: ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMVCD
    media control devices: ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMMCI
    multimedia audio controller: PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_7012&SUBSYS_200B1631&REV_A013&61AAA01&0&17
    video code: ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMVID

i tried the top one on google, but honestly wasnt sure what to download so i thought it would be safer and wiser just to ask here!

Do i need to list anymore than these?

    Thanks

Just run a clean install from Boot with the NEC/Packard Bell Windows XP SP3 disc and we'll go from there.

Something to do with Remote Desktop Client; unimportant at present.

Did you try the audio driver(s) supplied by Gigabyte?

Yes mate i tried this audio driver just now:

    Realtek AC97 Driver5.10.00.6160

got the blue screen again once it was running set up

Am i supposed to download all the drivers from there?

As i have only downloaded the VGA and AUDIO not the ATA or LAN drivers?

It's so we are sure of what we are using.
We have no idea of the provenance of your disc or what you have done prior and during this time.
So a clean install with a properly licenced disc, the application of Windows Updates and then to the Drivers.

If you were lacking functional versions of either of the latter you probably wouldn't be here chatting about it. ;)
