Unfortunately some of the drivers suggested can be pretty generic (no 3D!) and even completely wrong on occasion.

It is worth a try. When I did it, I experienced no issues and once updated everything was running perfectly fine and it selected the correct drivers.

He is going to need the security updates anyway so worth a shot IMO.

Thanks not so bothered about older version of IE as i use firefox anyway

There is no "windows update" in comtrol panel

i did a search for it, the folder is empty.

This is not strictly a "legit" copy of windows, but i have used this cd to install xp on another (much newer machine) and it runs perfectly...

Right click 'My Computer' click on 'Properties' and there should be a 'Automatic updates' tab. click on that and click on 'Windows update site' if it appears.

Icons look up to date and modern, normal size. tried youtube, a "little" better but still not smooth

lets see what thes windows updates bring.

just to add, even when i selected "32bit" there was still no option for sis 7012 under "vga"

only a sis 7012 option under "audio"

if you are still missing drivers in device manager, find the instance id of the missing devices from (device manager) and either google it, or post it

    device-instance-id.png

windows update misses out loads of drivers, especially sounds, graphics, and chipset.

    Windows XP System Information
If you go to Start-Accessories-System Tools-System Information, you will get the screen shot below. There is a whole lot of important information about your System in this utility.

    xpsysteminfo.jpg

You can check your DirectX by going to Tools-DirectX Diagnostic Tool, this will inform you as to the version of DirectX your System is running as well as any errors or problems. You can also check your Sound and Graphic's with this tool.

On the left hand panel you can expand the + symbols and check such things as your IRQ's, Conflicts and sharing, Forced Hardware. Under the Components, you can click on the Sound Device to see what Sound Card your System has, CD-ROM, Display, Network, Modem, it lists all the Hardware in your System.

Under the Software you can check the Services, Running Tasks, Startup Programs and more. As it says it gives you all the System Information for your Computer.

    Thanks

Checked the irq's status is reporting OK for everything there

under system information, for sound it says:

    name: multimedia audio controller
    manufacturer: realtek
    status: error
    Pno Device ID:
    PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_7012&SUBSYS_200B1631&REV_A0\3&61AAA01&0&17

Ran direct x, under display all the tests were successful and everything appears to be working ok, no problems found.

Under sound there is nothing, all boxes are blank? it says no soundcard was found but i doubt i had one (apart from the built in one that came with the pc out of the box)

is this information of any use?
