I can vouch for the Supernatural cons. I go to the Asylum ones each year and it is 95% female! This year there were more guys than in previous years, but they are still largely in the minority.

If you are interested, there is a FB group dedicated to the upcoming ones in October 2012 and May 2013. Everyone on there is really lovely and friendly, if a little pervy (not all the time! lol).

I appreciate that Supernatural may not be your thing though. I know that Rogue Events (who do the Asylum cons) also do cons for The Vampire Diaries (not my thing) and The Walking Dead too. And, I think that one of the organisers is putting on his own Doctor Who convention too. He built a life size Dalek and brought it along to the convention, so of course I now have a photo of me with a Dalek! :D

Oh, yeah, quite a few of the guests at the SPN cons have been in lots of other sci fi/fantasy shows/films too so it might interest you, depending on the guests.

What about forums, that discuss the specific things you are interested in? That could be an interesting way in and a nice way to build a friendship that could turn into a relationship?

OP, have you considered taking the Mensa test? If you can get into Mensa, you'll find loads of intelligent women, and a fair smattering of them will be geeks.

Fwiw, I met my DH at Dungeons & Dragons, hosted by the Mensa LocSec (local secretary);) The blighter fireballed me!:rotfl:

  • Hmm yes - 'galloping knob rot' is the last thing I want! lol

@beverly1471 - I wouldn't be put off of dating just by what I said - I do think everyone has a match out there somewhere - it's just finding them that is the challenge!

@LannieDuck - LARPing sounds like it could be fun although I've been told to stay away from anything that could be used as a weapon (latex or otherwise). It's just better for everyone that way! I've no idea whether there is a group like that where I live... may have a look into that. :-)

@epskie - Yes, I am a Star Wars fan, have been since I can remember. Mostly into the original trilogy although I do like the Clone Wars series as well.

I'm not at all opposed to meeting a 'non geek' but in my experience non geeks tend to turn their nose up at the things I like. I'm not so keen on someone 'putting up with it' as that sounds like the things that interest me are some kind of inconvenience. Speaking as someone who was dragged to a lot of events as a child that didn't interest me, I wouldn't really want to inflict that on somebody else. Besides, it would be nice to have a shared interest.

I have plenty of interests outside of the usual geek things - I spent the weekend at Silverstone a few weeks ago for the British Grand Prix, for example. A lot of my friends are non-geeks and have remarked on a few occasions that I do not come across as a stereotypical geek.

I think I would have a lot more to talk about with a fellow geek though.

There are plenty of LARP events in Southern England - that's where I used to do them. We used to LARP in the old forts down on the South coast. I'm a little out of touch with events nowadays, but a quick google for 'LARP southampton' (for example) gives loads of hits.

It's good fun, and in some groups you get a good number of women doing it too (although it does vary by group).

I'd recommend conventions, too. They are a lot of fun, even if you don't find "true love". My daughter and I went to the Eastercon that had Neil Gaiman as a guest star - there were loads of activities as well as meeting the guests (I think you get a slightly older crowd than at anime cons.) My daughter has made loads of friends at cons, and found a couple of boyfriends - she met her fiance at a Uni anime club.

One of my friends is an organiser for Redemption, she keeps trying to persuade me to go...

However, if you want a con where the vast majority of attendees are women, try a Supernatural convention (for instance, Asylum http://www.rogueevent.co.uk/wordpress/?page_id=1775#) :D

BTW, did you know that New Scientist magazine has a dating site?

Thanks for the suggestions - I've never seen Supernatural although I don't mind taking a look at it. Not sure if they're showing it from season one anywhere on TV at the moment though. Will it matter if I start watching from a later season or is it all structured so you have to watch it from episode one?

The New Scientist dating site sounds interesting - I'll have a look on there shortly! :-)

My sister's addicted to Supernatural. From what i've seen it probably would be best starting from the beginning. She hates it when i watch a bit and start asking a load of questions :D

Post 56 made me spit my drink out, lol.

OP I'm sorry you haven't met you match, yet. But maybe you could try not looking for your match? I had some idea in my head about what the man in my life should be like, and boy was I wrong. When he (finally) turned up, he was nothing like I expected at all. But it didn't matter, he was amazing, it was amazing. I'm sure he probably wasn't expecting me either. But I'm what he got. And he seemed very happy with that!

A good relationship is about supporting each other and communicating (amongst other things, of course!) and if you have different interests, then that's just more to learn, isn't it?

Unless her interests are spending all your money and trying to crack on to your best mate, of course...
