pic you have shared. I actually think the last sentence is funny, and maybe something I'd show to a friend, but it only is in conjunction with the first, so even if you can laugh off the 2nd bit, the first is a criticism at the person named in the quote ie MIL saying she's telling you what to do with your own kids. Re-read it with fresh eyes. I wonder if you have just focussed on the bit about husband needing a lot of improvement, known enough about your MIL to know she agrees and not read the whole phrase?0 -
jokes are funny because we identify the truths of them - if people didn't see truth in it they wouldn't think it was funny.
She however may not want to see that truth.
FWIW I have one mother in law who would laugh with me, and one who would probably then not send a birthday card the next year.
It's about being sensitive to others. I regularly post 'teenage funnies' on my wall knowing my kids will see them - and they regularly 'like' them.......... because we all know what they don't do around the house! But if they weren't true it wouldn't be funny.
In posting this you are poking at your MIL and criticising your husband.0 -
I am pretty sure that my MIL wouldn't be offended as she knows that her son is a bit of a useless big kid. I'm not sure I'd share it though, just in case....0

Considering my kids aren't even into double figures age wise let alone married I can't speak as a MIL but if I was I wouldn't find it offensive. It's a joke and clearly meant to be. Am curious though as to whether the MIL actually saw it or is basing her offence on someone else's interpretation of it.

My son often posts jokey captions on his FB page that I would find insulting if he said them to my face, and appeared to mean what he was saying...
BUT I don't take that much notice of fb comments - I certainly don't expect him to censor what he posts because I might happen to see it and take offence. Sometimes I find fb irritating and in poor taste, and just plain intrusive, but then I un-sub for a while... no-one HAS to be on fb....I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
It would say to me two things:#
a: that I was an interfering so-and-so who was always telling d-i-l how to bring up her children
b: that I hadn't done a very good job of bringing up mine.
And yes, I would think it was aimed at me.
I would not find it in the slightest bit funny.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

My MIL would love it, and think it very true! However, she never ever interferes in how I raise my children and always sticks to the rules I set :-) She's always said that if we get divorced, she'll keep me and the kids rather than her son! I'm pretty sure she's joking about that, she's a fab MIL, I am a very lucky woman!0

The problem with facebook is that the world and his wife get to see things like this, and so many would probably assume that you are having a dig at your MIL and she knows this.
I have seen all sorts of instances where posted comments have caused major rifts in families because of something similar.
If I were you I would ring her asap and tell her you have removed it and reassure her that you were in no way referring to her personally.
(just a thought but when you posted this joke could you not have put some kind of rider with it to say how lucky you were to have such a great MIL?)0 -
I don't think it would bother my MIL. She's pretty thick-skinned about stuff like that, plus she'd probably find it (vaguely) funny. It would, however, upset my husband on his mother's behalf. He wouldn't be terribly cross or anything, he'd just think it was a bit naff and unnecessary.
I'm not really into all that 'hilarious' mother-in-law joke stuff anyway, nor jokes about how useless men are or how women are nothing but nags and you'd 'get less for murder'. It's lazy and unfunny and should be consigned to bad end-of-season shows in Blackpool. The world's moved on, IMO."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

Like 7sw, it would worry me that that was what my DIL really thought of me, even if I had previously thought we'd had a good relationship. I'd be going back over things trying to see whether I'd been interfering and wondering whether she'd been gritting her teeth and just pretending to like me.0
