Thanks for all the advice - I was on 3 for £30 with Ntl - we also paid £15 extra for Scottish footie (which I agreed to as have dragged OH south of border!) and for talk evening and weekends. Somehow our bills seemed to spiral up though and the last one was for £62.50!!!!!

So phoned Virgin this morning - hardly any wait (then that could be that I called at 8am on the dot!) and I've been moved to a package which will cost £39 per month for Scottish footie, broadband, TV (don't know what level) and phone. Only get free calls at weekends - but then to be honest only really use the landline at the weekend. And not a limited time offer. The guy I spoke to was lovely - he looked up all of the calls etc we made to see what was the best deal and also offered a few other things (which in the end weren't really relevant to us but nice that he was really trying to keep us as customers). I've been moaning about our phone bill for ages but have been procrastinating about actually doing something about it til I read these posts this morning and was spurred into action! Thanks for all of the advice! (PS for anyone else doing it - I also pressed the "I want to leave" option but then chose the "not because of sky" option - though I did mention it when I spoke to the chap on the end of the phone)
  • Followed this thread and made some notes on the deals that others have been getting for 'ammunition'. Phoned VM just now - 0800 052 9403, clicked through on thinking of leaving VM (option 3) then held for about 5 mins. Spoke to an amiable guy called Martyn. Said my package seemed to be expensive compared to other deals.

TV XL + Phone (basic - local calls free at W/E) + 2MB broadband for £49.50

He started to tell me that other BB deals were not as good on speed down ASDL line and did I use all the channels. However, I said that I was a loyal customer and had seen various better deals offered to VM customers on the MSE forums. He then said he could offer me a combined package for £35.50 which upgraded my phone to free weekend and evening calls to all landlines. That sounded good but I persisted that others had been offered free upgrades to their broadband as well.

The new deal he offered was for:
TV XL + Phone with free W/E & evening landline calls + 4MB broadband (which has other benefits incl. a doubling of the upload speeds) for £35 per month permanently!!

What a result! I will save almost 30% compared to my previous bill and have an upgraded service. Thank you Martin and all those who have posted their experiences on this forum.

Full credit also to Virgin Media for not giving in to Sky's exorbitant financial demands to retain those channels. In making a stand the consumer will benefit in the long run.
I am just about to email my thanks to Martyn. Apparently they print off complimentary emails to go on their 'wall of fame'

Well I finally got round to ringing after getting a card from sky offering me the whole lot of tv/phone/bb for £42
I got through to Nicki who went to great pains to explain the superior phone and broadband package that I get from them and how inferior the Sky broadband is.

I finally agreed on a package which, although hasn't been decreased in price, has increased in value.

I was paying £55 a month for XL tv, 4mb Broadband and Free W/E evening calls.
I will now be paying £56.45 a month for XL tv, Sky Movies, Sky Sports, 4mb broadband and free 24/7 calls.

Very happy with what I got as I have missed Sky Sports and being able to call people up in the daytime.

  • Phoned VM got upgraded to XL phone and XL TV for £20 a month. Was paying £23 for M phone and L Tv before.

    Thanks Martin
  • Phoned VM about leaving & how disgruntled I was about losing Sky One. Put on full package ie XL,phone, broadband, films & sports for £25 less a month than I am paying now - indefinitley!
  • Just got XL TV, XL Phone and XL Broadband for less than was currently paying for L TV L BB and L Phone.

Just called up and said that I felt I was paying too much, the guy cut it straight away, no questions asked.

Well I think I have just gotten an amazing deal!

I didn't even see this thread and thought I'd drop by to tell you all. Seems I was a bit late.

    Anyway...here's the deal I got...

    XL tv package (all channels)
Evenings and Weekend telephone calls free
    Phone Line rental
    4MB Broadband
    V+ service and installation

for just £36.50 per month indefinitely!

    Has anyone beat this?

So that people can compare what deals are being done, please can you (and others) also post the overall price that you have achieved?

    Many thanks

  • I have gone from paying about £60 a month to about £35
  • I was previously on the following which cost me about £45 per month.
TV XL (all channels apart from premium ie sports/films)
    BB XL - 2 mb
    Phone XL

    I now have:
    TV XL
    BB 4 MB
Phone XL. Free calls 24/7 to all landline numbers commencing 01 or 02 free (Calls are free up to one hour per call. The operator advised me that if the call was going to be any longer to hang up after 58 minutes and redial for another free hour). Phone Line Rental

This now costs me £35 per month indefinitely so although I have no additional tv channels I do have the phone and the upgrade to 4MB broadband and I dont have to phone up every 6 months to haggle. Didnt ask about V+ box because not interested in it at the moment. I phoned at 8am on the dot and got through straight away to a very nice man. I just said my sister in the same area had got the deal above and I would like it too. Little white lie but it worked.:T
