The password is the one to get into the router. You need to add a password to that to prevent anyone changing the settings. That's not the same as the password to use the wireless aspect of the router.

hi, read that, done the first section for wireless network several times before, but they do not go,just reappear;;; explained this in previous posts.haven,t tried second part;;
never asked for admin rights.
where does password come in.
I didn,t use a disk to set up router, and just set up sons this week , new one from primus, that had no disk either, don,t think many do now, practically, plug/play.
Do you think someone has got in router and changed settings for wifi.????

BTFON and BTOPENZONE H are public wifi hotspots. They use a small portion of the bandwidth of BT Total Broadband (BTTB) customers broadband service.

How it works: A BTTB customer signs up to BTFON/BT OPENZONE H and agrees to allow public access to this totally separate part of their router. In return they get access to the millions of other BTFON/BT OPENZONE H hotspots for no charge.

The general public can also use these hotspots, for a fee.

So they are on your neighbours' routers, but separate from the neighbours' broadband.


I believe the password johnmc is referring to is the network key - the code you give to your children to allow them to connect to your router. Personally I don't think the password has any bearing on your issue, as you can successfully connect to your router, albeit you have to do so manually.

The issue as I see it lies in the wireless settings on your laptop, as it is the laptop that is connecting to BTFON in preference to your router's AOLBB connection.

Your ethernet cable connection will only ever connect to AOLBB. To avoid clouding the issue you shouldn't take any notice of what the ethernet connection shows.

Not yet! There are 2 passwords. one allows you to change the router settings ("admin" in your case) and one to access the internet.

Anyone locally on BT will have BTfon or BTopenzone transmitting as well. The idea is to cover the country using other users routers to allow BT customers to access away from home.

got all that john;
doing the first part makes no difference, no matter if I put aol to the top, remove, it just comes back to top of list.
second part, delete is greyed out, so cannot delete it.from manage network connections.
I understand the pw,s , the admin is the generic ones that come with the router, never saw any reason to change it/them with the ip address;
the other pw is on the router, still unchanged to access wifi, for family et.al it auto does mine, or should, when I select it from the list;
the list is the problem,being manual, why does bt always go back to the top, when I have moved it down, and even removed it?
another op on here had same problem, it,s like being in a loop, and looking at the stats , i,ve used it, inadvertantly, several times, thinking I was on aol, wifi.unsecured.
changing pw,s aint gonna change that, is it ?

I don't use Vista myself and have no access to a Vista machine but you have ignored this suggestion - why?

This suggests that you do not have the necessary admin privileges to do this, so try booting into Safe Mode with Networking see here and see if Delete is still greyed out.

Either lack of privilege - hence logging in as Administrator - or that there is some 3rd party software preventing these changes being accepted.
