I agree with OP about attitudes to work. My cleaner said she couldn't come one day because she had to go somewhere with her sister. We later found out the sister was having her bum tattoed!! I jest not.

Personal recommendation is the way to go.

I had a wonderful cleaner, a young mum, who was doing a p/t course and then began to work a day a week.

When she worked two days a week her mum took over and continued to clean for me until Oh retired.

They both took pride in their work, were utterly trustworthy and became friends.

Two cleaners over the years took me for a mug in that I paid for 3 hours cleaning and was lucky if I got 2 hours' work. One thought I would be fooled by the cushions being plumped and lots of air freshener. Both got their marching orders.
  • Great post by bmj. I wish I had you as my cleaner.

Trouble is I've found that the cleaners I've had just dont take it seriously. They seem to treat it a bit like if they need the money one week they'll turn up otherwise they wont.

Same with the timekeeping. If they could get away with it they would.

The birthday one was a classic. Text at 10pm to say she wouldn't be there tomorrow because it was her birthday but she hoped it wasn't too inconvenient.

We replied, well actually is is a bit because its too late now to phone agency to get a replacement.

Got indignant reply- well it is my birthday!

That sort of attitude wound me up no end......

Bmj191 you sound fantastic! Really wish I could find a cleaner like you, don't suppose you're anywhere in the midlands!!

I do think recommendations are generally best though unfortunately I have no one to ask!

  • Oh well. 3rd cleaner sacked.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE LIKE THIS?

This one seemed ok to start with. Turned up on time etc. Slowly then the standard got worse and worse, then we realised she was turning up 15 mins late and leaving 15 mins early (paid for two hours). Last week we discovered she was barely staying an hour. Also, we suspected but now have evidence that she'd been nosing in personal stuff etc.

£10 an hour. Its her own business. Why on earth be like this? Really does defy belief the way some people behave.
  • When my children were young and we needed more income I became a cleaner, I was proud of the results of my work.

several years later I went to university, studying accountancy and hated the work when qualified, I much preferred cleaning.

I have had experience of cleaners that do not believe in cleaning under/behind the toilet seat and leave a build up of urine, soap trays in showers unclean, areas at the back of furniture not cleaned etc. my standards are high but I think some of them need to visit specsavers.
have seriously considered starting up again since this experience.
 Wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age.
Sometimes age just shows up all by itself ;)

In the end, it's not the years in your life
that count....it's the life in your years :D
