I'll refer you to my previous post ;) It doesn't "read" that way but we'll agree to disagree.

And you asked spadoosh why he did a menial job when he had a degree (which I thought was being a little ignorant), which is why I answered in an additional post. I was speculating on people's reasons for doing so when they seem more skilled on paper or in ability.

You also ask him why he's not doing a "meaningful" job, which implies you think that cleaners etc are doing meaningless work..no?

I can't help but suspect your attitude to your employees could be better, and yes, it sounds like you have had a few duds so far.

LOL. OK. Fair comment about the meaningful thing. Maybe I should have said more appropriate to his/her degree. Still think thats weird though - choosing to do a less skilled job.

It's not "weird". It's life, it doesn't always work out as we would like it to. I think you should try to be more understanding and not instantly write people off or judge them.

Rather than thinking so and so is "weird" from afar, listen to what they have to say about themselves.

Aside from that, I hope you find a more suitable employee (and you try to empathise with them in the process).

I do take ownership in going to uni i dont see how im not?!? however throughout my education it was constantly repeated that to succeed in life you needed a degree. I know i almost certainly made the wrong decision but struggle to see what can be done now?! Im not solely blaming the government but the ethos in this country at the moment is that success is based on financial power, this is something i wholeheartedly disagree with.

My parents are from a poor background and obviously the thought of their child going to university was seen as a good thing. About 70% of my year group went to university and being in the 'bright' group i think it was always going to happen. Again all of my close friends went to university and any advice i was ever given was essentially that i would be doomed to failure if i didnt go to uni.

Ive got no hold ups about it, im not annoyed or bitter i went (hell it was a v good time!) just a firm believer that not everyone should go to uni and you certainly dont need a degree to be a success.

When you left school, you were old enough and apparently bright enough to make your own informed choice. Accountancy seems an odd choice in light of the opinions you have expressed in your posts?

I am a firm believer that we should follow our dreams. Try to be the best you can be in whatever you do, mother, marathon runner, cleaner or brain surgeon. That is my measure of success.

We all know that emotional intelligence, drive, and a strong will are things you can't get an exam for. Only spadoosh can answer that one.

I agree with the sentiment that we should all be the very best we can be, to our abilities, but if it was as easy as getting a degree there wouldn't be so many graduates fighting for so little jobs.

"Success", for some, is measured by having a gorgeous wife, a great car, disposable income, designer clothes..but you can still have all those things and be very unhappy.

Bottom line, if spadoosh is happy, who cares what he does? I hate it when people try to impose their views on others.

I am not imposing my views on anyone. I was having a debate with spadoosh. I was interested to hear his comments many of which I agree with.

  • Paul, maybe you need to pay a better hourly rate ? I'm on a tenner an hour with six weeks paid hols a year.
To be honest, i hate cleaning, but since my employer clearly values me i put my back into every single task. I know her standards are extremely high, so when i've finished a job and she thanks me for doing it well, i'm chuffed with myself. That sense of pride in my work is fostered by a decent wage and good working conditions. Have you tried to see things perhaps from your prospective employee's perspective ?

Ever heard the saying, you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Maybe if you paid a bit more you might just attract a better worker.

How much do you pay then Paul? I know some people can take Mick in all jobs but I firmly believe if you pay a reasonable rate ie not minimum wage either you may well get someone better
