of course we work in retail, thats why we know what we are talking about you are obviously a primary school teacher who drives a clapped out old polo and eats lentils and thinks you is middle class and above us plebs
but who am i to judge
If you don't feel qualified to judge, then you should have reserved your own counsel on this subject - but it seems you couldn't resist.
I think I have just realised what your user name stands for - sb!:rotfl:
If you read my post correctly rather than shooting off the handle, you will see that I referred to both sides of the coin in respect of customers giving retail staff grief - and vice versa.
As I do a lot of shopping and have worked within retail establishments (albeit not customer facing), it is not just retail staff who have the monopoly of opinions on this subject.
For your information, I 'is not' a Primary School Teacher, I detest lentils and my car is a BMW, however, a Primary School Teacher may be able to educate you on your English and grammar - innit!0 -
Oh my god the towels thing reminds of my friend, she always looks at things in shops - clothes usually - and either dumps them elsewhere or drops them on the floor. Last time we went out she was blowing her nose on a super snotty tissues and throwing them on the floor. I keep asking her to clear up after herself but she says it's not her problem. She's one of those people who if she knocks some clothes off the rails as she goes past she'll just ignore it and soldier on.
I think I would be finding new friends. The tissue thing is a disgrace :eek:The best place for maximum amusement is the M&S returns desk, I don't know how the people work there and not go insane. I've seen people pick stuff off the shop floor and just take it to the desk and ask for a refund, then get very upset when they're told no way. My favourite was a very, ummm, "curvy" woman who was at least a size 18 who wanted a refund on a dress that was a manager's special so was non-refundable. It was a size 14 and she said she hadn't had time to try it on, but it obviously not a size 14 as she couldn't get it on, therefore she had a right to a refund as it wasn't fit for purpose. I'm a size 14 and the dress looked about right, how she thought it was going to fit her was beyond me. I had to stop myself from butting in and saying "excuse me madame, but I think you'll find you're seriously underestimating your size".

Your "friend" is scum, pure and simple.
And she (and her ilk) are probably a reason why some in retail do not enjoy their job. I'd love to give her a taste of her own medicine, where does she work ?0 -
Whats wrong with that?
I see no problem with that particular issue, but I can see what the person's getting at. There are some customers who like to linger past closing time and when pointed out that the shop is closed, they just reply that they don't want to buy anything, as if they don't understand that remaining in the shop stops it closing properly and stops the staff going home and when they have no intention of spending money it becomes a !!!! take.0 -
Having just read this entire thread, I am reminded of the old joke 'every group of friends has someone everybody thinks is stupid/smelly/boring and if you don't know who it is it's probably you'.
If you don't find yourself sympathising with the OP then you are probably one of the annoying rude customers he is referring to and should take a look in the mirror before criticising him.
And no, I don't work in retail.0 -

The best thing for some scumbag, thicko customers would, I hate to say, be a good smack in the mouth. Sadly, that isn't allowed.0

I had one recently who complained about my attitude because I asked him to stop raising his voice at me when he obviously wasn't raising his voice and "isn't the sort of person who would do that"! Yes of course, he was speaking to me in a completely calm and polite manner and I decided that a great way to wind him up would be to ask him to stop shouting at me!
I've got a husband like that :mad:0 -

Wow this thread has a lot of replies! Firstly thanks to everyone who can relate to this or posted their own stories. Good to know I'm not alone with this one lol.barbiedoll wrote:You have my sympathy OP, I've worked in retail too!
The bit about them banging on the door is spot on. Worse is when they bang on the door of a locked and darkened shop while asking "Are you open?"
And it's all very well expecting you to know about the items you sell but some of their queries are very stupid. I worked in Woolworths and questions asked of me included such gems as...
"Do you think this dress will fit my baby?" (Baby not actually with customer, how the hell would I know if it will fit?)
"Is this any good?"......about a Nick Faldo golfing video. I was a 22 year old woman, I wouldn't have recognised a golf club if you hit me over the head with it.
"Am I allowed to buy just one type of sweet from the Pic 'n' Mix?"........!!!!!!!
And the all-time classic.....
"Do you work here?".........No, I just wear a hideous blue nylon outfit and a name badge because my fashion sense is really bad.
Aha I get questions like that all of the time. It doesn't really bother me though. Just share it round work when the customer is gone
As for the uniform, That's happened to me too! I've been made to wear all kinds of hideous tops and people still ask you if you work here. After the length of time I've worked the job I think that people couldn't possibly get any more stupid/ rude but then someone comes along and surprises me again!
This is spot on!
As lots of people have already said. Most people who shop are fantastic. But it's the minority which seems to spoil it for everyone else.I try to help as much as I can. But I'm also honest and speak my mind.
