Rude Customers >:(

Options
There must be something in the air where I live at the moment. Because this has by far been the worst month I've worked since I got my first job 7 years ago in retail. Retail just seems to be full of miserable, dumb, rude people who are out to give you a bad time.

1: Receipts. KEEP THEM. Don't throw them away. Don't bring it back and tell me 'An item like this isn't worth keeping the receipt for.' The receipt is technically worth the amount you paid for the items on there. So if you bought a kettle for £20, The receipt is worth £20.

Fine you don't always need a receipt, but a proof of purchase. But if you're too lazy to go get one. Don't come in and swear at me or my colleagues because of something that's YOUR FAULT. I don't give a !!!! how long ago you bought it, if you can't prove you bought it from here. That's YOUR FAULT.

2: Opening times. Our shop is open 9-5:30 7 days a week. That gives you 8 hours and 30 minutes to come in do what it is you need to do.

5:35 isn't between those hours, Neither is 5:40. So when the door is locked, the lights are off and the shutters are down. Don't bang on the door whilst we're cleaning up everyone's mess. I don't care if it's 'Something quick' It's probably not, I've been serving rude people for over 8 hours and I have a home and family to go home to. Come back when we're actually open!

3: I'm not an expert on anything we sell. I get paid near minimum wage to work here and I've received no training on any of our products. So therefore. Don't call me unhelpful when I don't know something and I cannot find the information. Doing your own research won't kill you.

Some more things:

I don't care if you're parked on double yellow lines and need to get in and out quickly. Go park somewhere legal, I'm not rushing around because of your stupidity.

I don't care if you need to pick your kids up from school, if your bus is nearly here and you're in a hurry. Plan your day better because once again. I'm not rushing around for you because it makes it more likely that mistakes will happen, and you'll be the first to complain about it.

If your child won't put something back on the shelf, Don't say 'Put it back or the man will tell you off' I'm not a bad person. Try something called parenting or keep your legs shut in the future. Also I'm not here to babysit your children. So don't leave them unsupervised to get in other peoples way.

Oh and believe it or not. People who work in retail are people too. We're not animals, or stupid. So stop treating us that way. If you're nice to us, We'll be nice to you. But if you're not. Don't be suprised if we can't be bothered to help.

The sooner I get our of the hellhole known as retail, the better.

RANT OVER.
I try to help as much as I can. But I'm also honest and speak my mind.

As I said. Something must be in the air at the moment because usually my working day is enjoyable but recently. I've woken up in the morning dreading going to work. Think that's a sign you need to find another job. lol

Yep i totally agree OP, most of the customers ive met have been nice to talk to, help them find what they're after but there is the odd 1 or 2 who for some reason think you have a magic wand in your back pocket that you can use to make the queues go quicker, conjure up new staff to serve customers on the tills or conjure up an item the customer wants to buy.

It's like you don't realise that is it YOUR JOB to deal with customers. You're not doing people a favour serving them, you are doing what you are paid for. And yes that does include helping with enquiries.

I do my job to the best of my ability. These aren't 'enquiries'. Just people being rude when they're in the wrong.

That reminds me, last week I went in to a small local business, started chatting with one of the workers when some rude b*tch walks in..

'sorry, im on double yellows and must go first. I need to pay for these please..' (she had obviously been in and put things to one side earlier that day).

When I laughed at her she gave me the evils. Needless to say she had to wait that extra couple of minutes.

I also remember a number of years ago I worked @ Starbucks. We had a tip cup on the counter which was getting quite full (it was a busy December), some guy didn't want to break in to a £10 note, so when I turned my back he helped himself to some of the tip money . When I pulled him up on it he responded with '!!! on, its Christmas' --- well go a f*cking steal from someone else you moron!

I totally sympathise with you though, having worked in retail it does seem some days all you see is the cretins of society. Usually Saturdays and in my experience usually woman .

You have my sympathy OP, I've worked in retail too!

The bit about them banging on the door is spot on. Worse is when they bang on the door of a locked and darkened shop while asking "Are you open?":mad:

And it's all very well expecting you to know about the items you sell but some of their queries are very stupid. I worked in Woolworths and questions asked of me included such gems as...

"Do you think this dress will fit my baby?" (Baby not actually with customer, how the hell would I know if it will fit?)

"Is this any good?"......about a Nick Faldo golfing video. I was a 22 year old woman, I wouldn't have recognised a golf club if you hit me over the head with it.

"Am I allowed to buy just one type of sweet from the Pic 'n' Mix?"........!!!!!!!

    And the all-time classic.....
"Do you work here?".........No, I just wear a hideous blue nylon outfit and a name badge because my fashion sense is really bad.
"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"
