incidentally, has anyone on here seen the film "Clerks"? the tagline is "just because they serve you doesn't mean they like you".

a must see for anyone who's ever worked in retail (as long as you're not easily offended!)

What I hate is when upper management bend over backwards and override the policies and procedures that they put in place when a complaint is escalated to them and because they are too spineless to defend them and give in to unreasonable demands from rude customers just to get them out the way, sure it might resolve the complaint in the short term but it just makes the people on the front line look stupid and make these people expect the same special treatment all the time.

One of my favourite films, and something that should be shown to kids as careers advice (along with Office Space).
  • i agree customers are getting ruder these days. I get fed up of being told im stupid because im not an expert in everything in the shop. I work on the counters in a supermarket (deli, hot deli, fish and meat) and yet a customer the other day asked me where we kept some random product and shouted at me when i went to find a member of staff who would know and be able to help. He told me i should know everything in the shop.

Ah yes - I know those fellings well. I used to work in a shop in shiopn within a well known department store, on the home floor. A guy once ranted at me for not knowing the full range and stock of a menswear shop in shop 2 floors down ;)
On another day, a female who obviously thought she was so much better unfolded the top towel on everyone of our displys then threw 2 down in front of me just as I finished with a lovely customer as 'she wasn't going to fold them'. They woman I was serving gave her such a look :rotfl: This was on an incredibly busy Saturday I might add.

To all in retail - thankyou for your service, I very rarely get bad service, and if I do I always assume the poor sod has just had to deal with one of the many 4rses I see in shops.
Many years ago I was "customer services manager" for a very large company, we I didnt have to deal with the public, just other companies, I had one particularly good member of my team who could listen to, and converse with complete idiots, she never got flustered, never became rude, and the customer always thanked her at the end. We called her (mother) Theresa, needless to say her performance reviews always went well.

I'm not in a retail/customer service role but I have to deal with my fair share of idiots.

I had one recently who complained about my attitude because I asked him to stop raising his voice at me when he obviously wasn't raising his voice and "isn't the sort of person who would do that"! Yes of course, he was speaking to me in a completely calm and polite manner and I decided that a great way to wind him up would be to ask him to stop shouting at me!

I wish I could put some of the personal CCTV we have of rude customers on Youtube, it would open some peoples eyes!

But alas, the DPA prevents me doing so... :(

I had a customer in one Sunday at 5 to 4 - we close at 4 - and as he came in I told him there was only 5 minutes and he was fine with that. So at 1 minute to 4 I told him I wasn't allowed to serve him after 4 so if he could please go to the tills...

Oh my god the towels thing reminds of my friend, she always looks at things in shops - clothes usually - and either dumps them elsewhere or drops them on the floor. Last time we went out she was blowing her nose on a super snotty tissues and throwing them on the floor. I keep asking her to clear up after herself but she says it's not her problem. She's one of those people who if she knocks some clothes off the rails as she goes past she'll just ignore it and soldier on.

The best place for maximum amusement is the M&S returns desk, I don't know how the people work there and not go insane. I've seen people pick stuff off the shop floor and just take it to the desk and ask for a refund, then get very upset when they're told no way. My favourite was a very, ummm, "curvy" woman who was at least a size 18 who wanted a refund on a dress that was a manager's special so was non-refundable. It was a size 14 and she said she hadn't had time to try it on, but it obviously not a size 14 as she couldn't get it on, therefore she had a right to a refund as it wasn't fit for purpose. I'm a size 14 and the dress looked about right, how she thought it was going to fit her was beyond me. I had to stop myself from butting in and saying "excuse me madame, but I think you'll find you're seriously underestimating your size".
