leaving children for 6 months

Speaking from experience, my mum did a couple of 9 month runs to the Falklands whilst I was growing, and it hardly tramatised me.
I used to have a weekly if lucky, ship to shore call with her with modern technology it should be much easier.
Kimberley as well as being a mum, don't forget who you are and what your dreams and aspirations, it's all very well for many posters here to sacrifice heir lives at the alter of children, but at what cost?
If this move can give your career a boost and ultimately improve your family units lifestyle, why not, 6 months is nothing.0 -
I always thought that too and "normal" state school holiday's seem to be about every 8 weeks?
Nope, private schools have much longer holidays, though not as long as university, my stepson's girlfriend has broken up for the summer already :eek:Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)
December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.100 -

You also have the children who only went home for the summer holiday and stayed in school for about 9 monthsShut up woman get on my horse!!!0 -
Would you be coming back to see them or would it be literally 6 months without seeing them?
I guess it depends on if you trust their dad too. Kids grow up so quickly that you might "miss" important things and achievements if you were away.
Is this job a "once-in-a-lifetime" thing?
On the other hand, 6 months goes by so quickly, but if it were me (I hate using that line!), I would ask them how they feel about it and to address any fears they have (not that I think you won't.:o).
It's a toughie, but at the end of the day, only you can decide what you feel is best for your family.

 As far as I'm concerned, at no cost. I never worked when my children were young, my choice, I've never felt like I've sacrificed my life "at the alter of children" for one minute, I've had a very happy and fulfilling life thank you very much. I have my dreams and aspirations, just because I chose to stay home with my kids it doesn't mean I've settled for some sort of substandard life.Speaking from experience, my mum did a couple of 9 month runs to the Falklands whilst I was growing, and it hardly tramatised me.

And my now grown up kids are emotionally balanced and independent, I haven't clipped their wings or stunted their emotional growth by being home throughout their childhood.Dum Spiro Spero0 -
i just thought , if the kids were in boarding school they would be away for about 5 months and they wouldnt get to skype every night so this is only 1 month more and they get there dad which is a huge bonus
You say that like sending an 8 year old to boarding school is just fine and dandy.
Honestly, I don't understand why some people bother having children, do they know its not compulsory?0 -

I do.
I haven't.
We all have different experiences which is why the OP really can't base her decision on anything we say. :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!

Its a balance. A parent who works away need not emotionally stunt their child, neither need a sahp. But both could!
If we had a child i would be a sahp, dh would work away still, and shock horror, later it would be very likely to board. Poor thing would be scuppered on all counts, with the worst of all worlds.:D0 -

My grandfather was both sent to boarding school at 8, so were his brothers etc, my father and 3 brothers were not, my granny didnt want them to but they were the only ones from their generation in the family who didnt. None of them felt unloved by their familys and they really enjoyed it.
I didnt go to boarding school till much older and loved it, there were children there who only went home for the summer holidays and i still know a few of them and they are happy adults and have no bad feelings about it. The ones who stayed that long did so because either their parents moved a lot due to work or lived abroadShut up woman get on my horse!!!0
