OP you have to be on a wind up or are very thick.

I feel so sorry for that poor boy.

    Of course it does!

The difficulties that are happening now are because of how far away his dad is. Or at least they are compounded by it.

Still, it makes me wonder why he moved so far knowing there were difficulties with parenting.

You're a Mum - In all honesty, hand on heart, would YOU have done that to your children?

The most important thing is the boy.

Are you saying that the main obstacle to taking the child on holiday is the 6 hour drive, and that the father is not doing it because he wants the grandparents to shoulder half the journey?

If that's the case, he's not fit to be the child's primary carer. Parenthood is not about possession of the child, and refusing to help out because the "other side has the child". If an extra 6-7 hours however many times in the year isn't worth it, how can he cope with having the child full time?

Think about it. If the wellbeing of the child truly is the aim, it doesn't matter who's "got it". All parties that care for it should be busting a gut to ensure it's alright. And not expecting a pat on the back for it, or to have the trophy/child to show round.
