I can see why people are so upset if this has happened to them and I won't be filling up at a Supermarket till this is all sorted now but I don't really think its necessary to come on here and slag off Tesco's petrol generally...some people really do hate them don't they. At the end of the day other suppliers have had problems in the past aswell, and few companies hold their hands up to things (ahem...Renault...opening bonnets).

Yes Tesco do make alot of profit (and maybe this offends some people) but it must be for a reason as their is plenty of choice (and at least they try to be green - e.g. green clubcard points for re-using carrier bags).
  • I love Tesco's. As a supermarket they provide a great service and we have saved £££s by using clubcard points. It is my supermarket of choice (although I don't shop because that's for girls ;) ).

Mrs GG buys her petrol at the supermarkets because she believes it's all the same. I prefer to use quality fuel and to support locasl garages Our town had two outlets in 1999 when we moved here. The second one closed before Christmas and is likely to be developed for housing.

    Cheapest isn't always best.

    :)

Why wait for Petrol Retailers to hold up their hand?

Name & Shame - To those who've been unfortunate enough to have been caught out - then let's know from whom, where and when you purchased your petrol.

    Advice already given:

Keep your receipts etc or your card statements.

For those who've paid by cash then by you may have difficulty proving you purchased fuel at a particulatr garage at a particular time. By naming and shaming you may be able to ask the garage to check their CCTV or ANPR (Automated Number Plate Recoginition) system to prove you were a customer of theirs at that particular time.

This may also help those who may not have an immediate problem, but a few days, weeks, or months down the line - who knows.

Just a suggestion hope it helps.

    Any thoughts

Well Mine was bought at Tesco in Buckingham. There are 2 petrolstations on my route and as I go to Tesco fruit for work (I buy my own from an organic fruit and veg box scheme) it's a natural place to stop and top up. And I get clubcard points ;)
My mechanic has already told me he has had another car in a few weks ago that was damaged because Tesco Buckingham has some contaminated fuel - somethign about the tanker not havign been cleaned proerly but now he's wondering if that was true and if it's infact part of this big thing going on...

He agrees that chances are this is what caused my problems and to keep a firm hold of my discarded ECU (thank goodness I hadn't gotten round to throwing it away!!!) and keep topping up at the other garage in town and buy their ultimate unleaded for a while. more expensive yes but as he said if the damage has already been done or not then you loose only a few pennies by buying more expensive fuel for a week or two...

Is Shell safe to fill up?

I always fill up from Shell. Last filled on Saturday. So far didn't notice any problem in my car.

Anyone see this site? Tells how to claim compensation against it.

The site doesn't say who they are or how to claim. I wonder if they are a firm of 'claim specialists'

I'd certainly be very reluctant to send them my details until I knew more.

Just a thought - if you're going to phish, get people when they're most vulnerable.
