Why, what's it got to do with her?

The mother is, apparently, a good friend. Generally speaking, if a friend's been ripped off, you tell them about it. If she finds out by other means, she's going to have some fairly pointed questions about why OP kept their mouth shut...

If it was my daughter I'd be getting a court order to ban him putting her in the car and possibly seeking to deny access. He is PUTTING YOUR KIDS LIFE AT RISK!!!

Tell his mum, dad, brothers, sisters, postman, friends, boss and everyone else you can think of. If he cant put his kids before his pocket he doesnt deserve to be near them.

Ridiculous statement. You have no reason to suppose the car is unsafe.

She says she's a good friend but also that the ex never offered her money from the sale of the car to go towards the kids. So seemly shes happy enough for him to diddle the mother out of the cash as long as she gets in on the act - some friend!

I don't think that was the point. I think the point that was being made is that the money wasn't being used for the children's benefit at all, as was the original intention.

If he'd sold the car, but taken the kids on holiday with the money, people would probably feel differently about it...

Which would be equally foolish - either its ok for him to sell the car behind his mums back or it isn't.
  • At the end of the day, this guy has effectively pulled the wool over his Mother's eyes by down-grading the Car she had given him money to buy under the guise that he needed the car in order to pick up his Children / her Grandchildren.

As per usual there are MASSIVE assumptions being made by posters (the Car is unsafe, the children's Mother is only annoyed as she didn't see any of the money made from the re-sale, etc), but at the end of the day the question is: would you "dob him in" to his Mother?..

    Answer: In an instant

Which are simple to answer. It's none of my business, it is between a mother and her son.

There is an important point you have missed - SHE chose the car, not him.

Have you never been given a gift that you didn't like, and then taken it back and exchanged it for something else, or sold it on eBay and bought something you did want?

That is the situation here. He is still using the car he bought to collect his children, so the gift is still doing what she intended it to do.

If I have ever been given a gift which I: a) already had, or b): wasn't keen on, I have been completely open with the person who gave me the gift in the first place, and had the Item refunded.

Everyone has their own moral code in life, but personally I would never dream of trying to pull off an act in this manner with a gift from anyone, friends or family.

And what if the person giving it to you insisted that you had the one they wanted you to have, not the one you actually wanted? And you needed this so much that you had to ask them to help you out in the first place?

Chances are, I wouldn't want a car that an older lady had decided was the best for me, I'd prefer to get one that I was comfortable with.
