Another side of the panic buying partly condoned by our Dave.

If everybody fills up now they cause a few shortages which can be replenished before any strike action giving the government a bit of breathing space to get alternative deliveries sorted and relieving a bit of the pressure when it hits.

£35 is 25 litres of fuel. I can't think of any cars with tanks that small.

If her car is anything like mine, it still has 15 litres in it when the fuel light comes on.

I can - my smart car only has a 22L tank - costs me about £22/£23 to fill up :D (usually have about 5L in reserve)

Annoying thing is, I actually have to fill my car up Saturday as I'm going to France - but I'll have to wear shades when I go into the garage as my spend will make me seem like a panic buyer!!

Personally it pains me to put in £85 of diesel every week so I'm quite looking forward to an excuse not to :)

Energy Minister Ed Davey has today reiterated the government advice for car drivers to top up their vehicles.

Infact he is now saying don't let the tank drop below 1/2 full (revised up from previous suggestion of 1/3 full)

When exactly the strike is happening? I think they have to give at least 7 days notice. That means strike before Easter break unlikely.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

I've just heard someone on the TV say that if we all had full tanks it would double (may have been more but I was only half listening :o) the "storage" capacity of the country.

No dates yet advised, but Easter is more than 7 days away.

They could give notice tomorrow and still hit the Easter break ...

I am sure the military will come up with more than 300, they have loads of ADR and tanker drivers already. If the government play this one correctly it will be miners strike mkII.

The military will be using their own tankers by the looks of it. Their tankers on the whole only have 1/3 the capacity of a typical petrol tanker so they'd need going on three times the number of tankers currently in use to keep the supply up at normal levels. They don't have that many.

And what if your car doesn't hold that much? The day my daughter bought her car she managed to squeeze just over £40 worth in, usually it's around £35 - £38

What car only has a 6-7 gallon tank?

The Govt can't win with this one. The general public are, in general, f*cking idiots, so the Govt give sound advice (..."take sensible precautions"..) and its taken as panic stations.

That advice was not sound. There currently are no strikes planned. They have merely voted on the option of going on strike. Therefore there is no need to tell people to top up their tanks and keep a jerry can in the garage as the minister did on TV yesterday.

You'll notice that Cameron then did a complete retraction and said people didn't need to.

This was nothing more than the government deliberately generating panic and pointing to the pumps going dry. They also came out with the old "lives will be put at risk if there's a strike" bollox again because emergency services were always guaranteed fuel during the 2000 strike.
