    Things can work a bit like that in our house - there are specific things that certain people like more than others and I try to cater for all tastes, but nothing is specifically ear-marked for anyone. There are quite a few things that I like that no-one else does (handy that :D) so I would be surprised if I went to eat it for lunch and it was gone but I'd just find something else to eat.


    Same applies in our house. Neither DS or myself like ice cream much, OH and DD love it. DS and I love a slice of cake, OH and DD can take or leave. We all have different tastes but, ultimately, we all end up with a treat we like.

    DS, however, has discovered he's quite partial to the Fox's chocolate ring biscuits sitting in the biscuit tin that I'd (quietly, sshhh) earmarked for myself :cool:...
    It's wouldn't have not wouldn't of, shouldn't have not shouldn't of and couldn't have not couldn't of. Geddit?

    The more I read on this forum, the more normal my life seems.

    I don't buy treats with the food shopping because I don't trust myself not to eat it. If we fancy a treat then we will pop to the local shop and get it, I don't share food out and I definitely don't charge my kids for a chocolate bar.
    They are not allowed to help themselves to any food at all because if one does it then they will all do it, I would end up with empty cupboards very quickly which is no good with 6 people in the house and a budget to stick to!

    The last (and only time) I ever got involved with divvying up food/drinks was when I was at Uni and our house all chipped in for crates of beer or multi-packs of crisps. It made sense at the time but it created huge problems when one of us got smashed and had the munchies...but that was so long ago I don't care to remember much more than that!

    At home, myself, the missus and our 3 kids have what we want when we want it. The shopping is done on a Saturday and we don't usually buy 'treats' so to speak. If you're divvying up food and drink in a family environment there's something massively wrong imho.

    I've a budget to stick to but I don't do a very good job of that. :o

    As a matter of interest, what happens when your kids get in from school absolutely ravenous (happens every day here). Mine just forage for stuff and are quite likely to fill a plate with a banana, a couple of yogurts, a couple of biscuits etc. That just keeps them ticking over until dinner. My son will often have another snack about 9:30 because dinner was 'ages ago' (maybe 2.5 hours). Teenage boys are un-fillable, the girls don't eat as much but they still snack a lot.

    If I had to always actually serve up the food they wanted, I'd be on waitress duty all day.

    If I had to always actually serve up the food they wanted, I'd be on waitress duty all day.

    Teenagers snacks are built into our budget, I find it better than being in denial about just how much they care capable of putting away :-)

    I'd be forever making ham & cheese toasties, whipping up noodles, frying up eggy bread etc. But I suppose it would have the benefit of not finding a pile of crumbs on the worktop when I get up in the morning :rotfl::rotfl:

  • Hmm, there's no point squabbling about it of course, but psychologists would probably argue that most people with significant weight problems have issues with food, else why else are they eating far more than the need?

    Plus you've said before that you think you have a weight problem because of how your mother was with your diet when you were younger. I distinctly remember one post where you blamed her for your weight problems in adult life because she didn't let you have treats when you were growing up, hence you've compensated ever since.

    Those are issues with food.

    now issues with exercise, yep thats me and thats why im over weight because i havnt been exercising for most of my life

    the period i did exercise a lot (did 2 hours a day) i got myself to 9 stone (never again, hated being that small)

    now issues with exercise, yep thats me and thats why im over weight because i havnt been exercising for most of my life

    If people ate properly, then all they would need is moderate exercise just to keep them healthy. For most people, maintaining a healthy weight is mostly about the food.

    I say this as someone who is trying to lose weight and I know for a fact that this extra weight is not due to lack of exercise (I get plenty) but due to eating far too much rubbish. Keeping all the treats in the house doesn't help but I can't deprive everyone of all the junky stuff - I'm the only one who is overweight. I wish I could buy willpower and swallow that down. :o

    you should rephrase that to 'eat too many calories' as its not about what you eat but how much you eat

    for me its exercise, i would rather eat a little bit more and exercise than go on a strict diet, not exercise and lose muscle
