I bought my car, pay for all the insurance and tax yet it is our car. My OH doesn't drive however this year I have paid for his insurance on it with the hope that he will learn and it will actually become our car and we can share the responsibility.
If he needs collecting or driving somewhere I will do it without question however where he can he does get public transport (living in London this is generally easier anyway)
With regards to seat allocation, OH will always get the front seat and it is his to offer should he wish. The only exception is parents (or those who are older (family friends etc)) they will be given the front seat which will be offered by either myself or OH. Generally if there is a man and woman, the woman gets first refusal as it is the more comfortable seat although the chances are the woman will offer it to the man because his legs are longer.Overdraft = £1000 Emergency fund = £2500

The next time you are going out with hubby to collect someone I think you need to be upfront and say that you're only going if you keep your front seat, that you resent being 'put' in the back and see how he reacts.
And just because he pays the running costs, that allows him to use the car, it does not make him its owner.
I think you need driving lessons.Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0 -
It might be worth pointing out that while everyone is talking about HIM paying the running costs, that isn't actually the case.
The OT states that THEY paymusictomyears wrote: »for the tax, insurance, MOT etc, out of our shared household budget.
So, he's not paid anything on the purchase price and is only paying a share of the running costs. Definitely a turd.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

I first realised there was this sort of hierarchy with car seating when I lived opposite a railway station. You'd be surprised how many women parked up to meet their partner off the train and slid over to the passenger side so the man could drive home!
I've never followed any hard and fast rules about where to sit, just wherever is convenient depending on who is in the car or who is being dropped off first.
If my OH ever accused me of using him as a taxi service, I would tell him in no uncertain terms where to shove his taxi and his services. I have a very childish streak and would probably refuse to get in the car with him at all after that.0 -
OP, learn to drive.
Lessons are expensive, so, if needs be, you know what to say when people ask, "What do you want for your next birthday?" Same for C'mas if required. It's amazing, the real independence that comes with a driving license.
And, as a general rule, never let your OH attempt to 'teach' you. That always ends with some/everyone sulking.:D0 -
I always drive so my DH sits in the front. If we pick up one of my friends, he generally offers to move to the back so we can chat (or more like so he doesnt have to be in the middle of it lol). If we pick up one of his mates, theyd sit in the back.
If we pick up my parents, DH always offers to move to the back so my mum can sit in the front, and hell sit in the back with my Dad.
If we pick up my Nan, same thing, he sits in the back.
If DH was driving, then I would offer to do the same with my Nan as shes elderly and its easier for her to sit in the front, but I wouldnt for my friends or parents if it was a longish journey simply because I really do get travel sick in the back if the car is small, they know that anyway and my Mum normally offers for me to sit in the front if we go anywhere with them.
I think the best thing to do would be learn to drive yourself! I mean why buy a car if you cant even drive it yourself and the person who is driving it, hasnt even contributed to it? Seems a bit strange.0 -
Get rid of him,its never too late you know.A woman who was in her 70s I knew divorced her husband and then went round the world.Even if you were on your own it would be better than this !!!!!!!.
Also I would get a motoring paper and sell the car.Its yours you sell it.
Let him catch the bus and you get yourself a better life.0 -
I always drive, my OH always sits in the passenger seat. No exceptions.
But that might be because I have a 2 seater car. Solves all sorts of "passenger" problems :rotfl:Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.0
