I've been reading through a lot of threads about reclaiming bank charges, but I can't seem to find out the info I need - there's so much and so many posts, it'd take about a month to go through!!
What I really want to know, how do I go about working out the amount to claim back?? I heard on Watchdog it was something like £4 and £2 (can't remember what these were for, presumably overdraft and charges) instead of the £30+ that banks are charging.
I have the majority of my bank statements and correspondence going back six years, so I'm assuming I don't need to send the initial letter asking for a list of charges (thus saving £10 a time - I've got about 4 banks to tackle).
Do I then go onto stage 2 of the claim? Should I send them an itemised list of the charges with dates and outline how much I think they should be.
Can someone clarify this for me??
Thanks for your help.

have a good read of martins article :-
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1141050760,24632,
then read it again and again LOL
and i think i read about 4 more times too...it sinks in in the end (i promise)
but that still won't stop you from having questions as each case is different
theres a calculator on there too that works out the interest for you for each individual charge
you claim the whole amount of the charge by the way unless you signed up to certain types of account that have a monthly charge i.e RBS royalties0 -
My partner and myself are on benifits (only just recently and not for long i hope). We have both had high bank charges in the past. I read on this forum that if my case goes to court i would need a N1 form. Is there anywhere on this site where i can download one, and, also, would we have to fill a N1 in for each of us?

Read the Reclaim Help Thread, link in my signature, post no 4 for what charges you can and can't claim. From your statements/lists input each charge into the Interest Calculator, link in Martin's article, and this will produce an itemised list for you to send with your letter to the bank. This must be accurate as it may form your defence should your case go to court.
To julie196143 as you are just starting out its a long time before you need to worry about court papers. However as you are on benefits you need to go to your local court and ask for exemption from court fees, take the relevant proof of being on benefits. You can then pick up all the forms you need from the court and don't forget to pick up several copies. Your local court will help you with this and the filling in of your form. Link to court costs etc in the Reclaim Help Thread too.0 -
Hello, Im new to this and I am deaf, I have been trying to understand how to apply my old bank Natwest to refund the charge that i had from 2001 to 2006. Can i apply for it?
Having following the instruction, i found it difficult to know where to start as my english is my 2nd language.
Can you advise me simple how do i claim the refund? I have had a look at my old bank statements, I have debit interests, basis of charges and unarranged borrowing fees (I was overdrawn). do i include all of these or just one of these? I had current account from 1991 until 2003 then i joined Advantage Gold account from aug/sept 2003 until 2006. This was stopped by Natwest because I was continuing overdrawn and failed to repaid back by overdrawn and Bank loan which now had been paid off. I owed the Natwest no more but do they owed me with Bank Charges?
Grateful to now where i can start and what i should apply for?0 -
Hello
I really need help, to start to claim all my bank charges back i have never done anything like this before and to be trueful it really scares me but i want to try and do it would REALLY appricate any help thank you.0 -
You need to start by reading Martin's article and then read it all again.
Step-by-step Guides: Bank Charges: Reclaim Your Cash | Top New Bank Account Calculator: Charge them interest Template Letters: (right click and save) Ask for charge details |Initial letter | Second letter | Small claims note Get Updates On Important Changes: Free Weekly Money Tip
Follow the steps by first of all getting all your information/statements by using the "Ask for charge details" letter. Its important you use this letter and don't just go asking for statements from your bank as they can and do charge per statement.
Once you have this information you then need to input each and every claimable charge, see post 4 in the Reclaim Help Thread linked in my signature, into the Interest Calculator along with the date and description of each charge. Again it is important this is accurate as this will form your defence should you end up taking your bank to court. This needs to be sent to the bank with your first letter asking for the return of your charges. If you don't get the response you want you need to send off the next letter and follow the steps through.
If you have any problems with the letter and the responses from your bank, come back and post your query on the relevant thread for your bank where someone will be able to answer your query.0 -
Hi, I'm 16 and have am account with Natwest and have previous charges of £38 each for like £1 overdrawn's, I saw that you could claim them back on TV and immediately rang Natwest.
I eventually got through to someone and had a big debate with some women, she told me I would have to go through some process as to why I think the charges were unfair and they would need to carry out an investigation etc.
I was really annoyed and said well the unfair nature of the charges is the fact they are £38, the cost of the charge itself is the crime, and she got all stuttery and just said she would send a letter, I got some letter 5 days later about contacting someone or something, seems like a delay process which I heard banks were trying to do now so people just forget about it
Can anyone help me and tell me how to get previous charges back please?0 -
