Vauxhall Astra 1.7 diesel estate, purchased for £461 nearly 5 years ago from Ebay and has only needed normal bits and pieces (tyres, rear exhaust pipe etc).
Have done 30k miles in it now (the car itself has done over 155k) and has never really given me any trouble and been a joy after my utterly useless and crap Audi A4 which costs us a pretty penny.
Bad bits
The blower only blows 2 speeds, full blast or not at all.
The gauge for outside temp is...errr....either very optimistic or very pesimistic.
Can only unlock the central locking from the drivers side.
Sun roof windy thingy has broken off.
But as a work horse/carrier of drum kit, it has been great.
Edit - when purchased, it came with 12 months MOT.
Thought I would give an update....still have the old girl although we think this may be her last year.
I have now done 40k miles in her, mostly trouble free but this last year has been more expensive for repairs although still not excessively so.
Not bad for the original £461 and less than average annual repair bills. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
I bought a 1987 Cavalier 1300 when it was just 2 years old. It was an abused and neglected ex company car. It had already done 66000 miles but not had an oil change in the previous 15000 miles! Basically it was very, very cheap and nobody wanted it. (Quentin Wilson called this model "the runt of the litter").
Spool on and it reached 100000 miles with everything still running. Still had the original back tyres and all original hoses, belts and cam belt (!) The car went like a rocket.
Spool on and at 200000 miles the front discs were getting thin and the CV boots splitting. These were replaced and the car was still running beautifully.
Spool on and at 300000 miles the CV joints were starting to click on full lock, the head gasket starting to weep a little and the exhaust manifold studs were weakening. But it was still running like a rocket and had always returned way over 40 mpg.
Then at 311000 miles it was hit in the back. Nothing mechanical was damaged so I got a repair done then sold it. The car looked great, the interior was like the day it left the factory (the seats had not sagged) and the mileometer read 11000!
The purchaser praised me on such a well looked after car for 111000 miles, I did not comment on the other 200000 missing miles. The car drove off to start a new life.
I doubt I will ever again have such a solid, dependable, straight forward car. Well done Vauxhall!
I had a few Mk3 Cavs including one as my first car and they ranged from 3x 1.6 L hatches and saloons, and a 2.0 GLi hatch.
Had a couple of cars in between then bought my favourite one, a 1992 K metallic black 2.0SRi. This was the 130bhp model, not the 115bhp it became with the new facelift.
Had a few more cars after this then bought my last mk3 Cav, a 1995 N 1.7TD LS. It had done 208k when I bought it for £450, sold it 8 months later with 225k on the clock for £400.
All of them were incredibly reliable given that I paid between £250 and £1000 for them.

Bit of a battered beast when I picked it up, but it's cleaned up really nice.
More later
Can't quite tell because of the pic angle but is that a 620ti?

I'm finding this mileage hard to believe:

If there is no service history/old MOT certs to back it up, or not able to check it online, then you have to take the mileage with a pinch of salt. Buy on condition.0 -
You guys might know as you have experience with older cars...
Can you just go to Halfords with a car that only has a tape/radio player and get a CD player and have them fit it? I was told this and it sounds too easy...
I really want a CD player though because the only tapes I have were ones I bought when I was 10

Yes. They'll advise if they can't fit it. Depending on car you might need a bracket/surround to go round it to fit it in the dash. Usually can pick these up cheap off the 'Bay.0 -

Yes you can. They normally charge about £30 for fitting and a cd player can be had for about £45.

You would be much better off upgrading your ICE going to a local specialist. They normally advertise in local press and while they do fit the mental systems to Corsas with 3 cylinders, they will have a range of decent value systems too.0
