  • Hi all!

I am looking for a car for around £600 to get me until the end of the year. I am a street performer and travel quite a bit (around 600 miles a week).

I am hiring a van at the minute at a cost of £60 a week and it is money down the drain, looking to earn as much money as possible this year whilst being as financially efficient as possible.

The rover 75 that I have seen in the past few pages looks a superb vehicle for the money ( I take it these dont have the head gaskett issues some other rovers had?).

any other tips of what I can get for around £600?

    thanks in advance!

Doesn't look at all bad! Reasonable performance, economy and size.

I'm surprised the dealer could afford the water used to clean the car with judging by the amount of fuel left. Perhaps he just used his old bath water?

Probably find that the petrol will be run down by time a buyer is found. These used car tradesmen always run around in which ever car has the most fuel in.

Quick update on mine post MOT and minor service - needed a CV boot fitted for £12 and everything else was spot on.

Rear washer now working, the pipe was clogged with algae (yuck!) but now works so a bonus.

Interesting thread, I really want to know where people find these bargain cars for a few hundred quid and they're still good cars. I am in the market for a motor between £400 - £600. CR8 postcode + 30 miles

Hit me up with some bargains people?

for what its worth my saga :

In 2005 my "trusty" Cavalier dies for second time in a month after 11 years at 142k miles (108 of which were mine). I need a car for work, I travel by train for 1 week before spotting a 1995 Mondeo for sale from someone at work for £590. We agree a token £10 reduction for cracked headlight (actually cost me £30 to replace) and she informs me it has an oil leak the garage "cannot" locate. Sump is indeed obviously wet. I suspect and am proved right that the one careful lady driver has blown the clutch. She offers to pay the cost, I decline as that would be awkward as I work with her, I buy the car for £580 with 54k on the clock. New clutch subsequently costs costs £600 so strictly speaking this is not a sub £1k car at time of purchase

Since 2005 the only costs I have incurred are
    - complete oil fills every 3 - 4 months (never did anything about the leak) so about £15 per go using cheap oil as it will not be in there for long so does not need to be high spec
    - one air mass filter for £33 at 60K miles (now overdue its next!)
    - one cam belt @90K for £120 all in
    - fuel and other consumables eg. tyres

Car has now got 148k on the clock, is in daily use and has never (yet) needed any work for MOT, broken down, needed any non consumable parts replaced or failed to start.

And the final rub - owing to 2 no fault accidents I have received £770 in "total loss" insurance payouts but not had it written off so the car actually cost me minus £190 to buy

Prior to 2005 I would never have even looked at a car less than £1,000 as until then I had assumed you needed to pay >£5,000 to get "low" mileage and therefore a vehicle that would "last". My MOT bloke tells me that the 1995 - 96 Mondeo is "one of the better ones for reliability", although clearly you would be very lucky to get one with low mileage nowadays so goodness knows what its replacement will be when it does eventually die, hopefully not before 200k at least
