Worth every penny just for thatI like that they are so understated... "wolf in sheeps clothing" springs to mind.

My first 5 series was the same. An old E28 528i which was smooth and quick. On a run back from Avignon to Lyon, we were stuck at 140 on the clock (140KPH honestly Monsieur Gendarme:rotfl:), and then I looked at the fuel situation:eek:, just before the red light came on.
That car used to put a smile on my face though.;)0 -
I remember being warned harshly against it at the time because it was 'going to blow gaskets constantly' of which it has subsequently blown none.
I'm no expert on Rovers but I think it's the 1.4 K series engine that's famed for head gasket problems & not the 1.6.
Someone will know if that's true or not.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

It's been through the headgasket replacement more than 20k miles ago by a previous owner that lost their money on it. If I recall correctly, they're all pretty much the same block 1.4-1.8 but with subtle differences (bore aside) between them.
Anyways, it's just getting a minor service today and hopefully some more cheap, trouble free motoring up to the next oil change.0 -

Didn't Rover come up with a new design gasket that cured the problem? I'm sure I saw this somewhere but could have imagined it
If so & yours has been replaced recently then you shouldn't have to worry (fingers crossed)Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

I think people started using the Multi Layer gasket from the Land Rovers. HGF isn't the root cause in most of the cases though it seems - it's something else like the Inlet Manifold Gasket giving in and allowing oil/coolant to mix that brings about the end result a lot of the time.0 -
Just found this thread. I decided to keep my cheap runaround and save rather than replace for anything else. I purchased a 2000 (X) Rover 25 1.6 with 55k back in August 2011 for the princely sum of £650 (sticker price was £1050 so a good haggle!).
I remember being warned harshly against it at the time because it was 'going to blow gaskets constantly' of which it has subsequently blown none. It hasn't caused me any major headaches at MOT time - rear brake pipes and a CV boot that was split replaced. I put 4 new tyres on it as the Kumhos that it had on never felt very grippy so the Hankooks have been the main expense (insurance and fuel aside).
Bad points on it: rear washer needs fixing (think it's a split in the cable), it drinks a bit more fuel than I would like (still managed to be strict with myself and keep to an average of 37.9 MPG) and tax is at the higher of the two older rates.
Not quite the disaster I was warned of.0 -

I believe that particularly bone-headed design was fixed later on.0 -
Just an update on the Ka I bought a few weeks back. Sold it and made £80 profit.
No way would it pass next MOT, needs too much done to it.
Now looking at a K-reg mk2 Micra. :cool:0
