Has anyone ever married and kept it secret?

I know a South African girl whose family disapproved of her relationship. She married her partner on her lunchtime and they both simply returned to work in the afternoon. A few months later they upped sticks and moved to England. There's no arguing with statements like that
Cue a few years later they've moved back to South Africa with their child and another baby on the way and they've been welcomed with open arms
Sad that they had to take such drastic measures0 -
My sis and her boyfriend got married a few months ago on the sly. Nobody knew, not even their parents or brothers and sisters. Some strangers were witnesses. They are in their late 40s and simply didn't want a fuss. They announced the marriage later the same day. Nobody was upset or annoyed to have missed it. Some were relieved to not have to get dressed up in some stupid looking satin number looking like a 70s toilet roll holder (ie me). The happy couple insisted on no presents but they got some anyway.0

Well, Romeo and Juliet got married without telling friends and family. I don't think it worked out very well for them!0 -
My brother and his wife got married and wouldn't tell anyone where they were getting married at - we only knew the day it was happening. She had a couple of friends as witnesses. I didn't care for myself but I know my parents felt it. They had a big party a couple of weeks later. I didn't care if they didn't want a big wedding but I do think they could have let my parents see them get married. She was estranged from her own parents at the time and I think that was probably the reason - but my parents are lovely and wouldn't fall out with anyone.0

Btw, I only had about a dozen people at my own wedding so I know about not wanting a big fancy do. All I wanted was to get married without a big fuss. I just don't think I could've done it without our parents and siblings being there.0

I know someone who went through a marriage of convenience so that a friend could stay in the country when his visa was running out. They didn't tell anyone because they were going to do a quickie, mutual divorce after a couple of years when he was ready to go home.
They started to get on better and better and decided to make a go of it as a couple. It was a bit awkward explaining to their families that they been married for some years! They've been together a long time now so it's all worked out well.0 -
Our wedding day was a surprise to my husband to be!!He was always asking me to set a date, but I kept putting off. i decided to surprise him on his 40th birthday...told him I had planned a day of surprises..I booked him the day off work, took him out for breakfast and gave him a birthday card that said "from your wife!" asked him if he would like to get married today. thank goodness he said yes

I had bought new suit for him, our 5 children were in on the surprise, they organised flowers and cake, but hubby thought it was just us and kids at registry office...until we got there and 50 guests were waiting. Surprised hubby managed to say his wedding vows, and then we went off to reception at local pub, all had a fantastic time.
Our honeymoon night was spent in a themed room in hotel!
we all had a fantastic day, lots of lovely memories!
don't think you could do it now as both partners have to be present to apply for wedding banns, but 13 years ago registrar was happy to help, although she did ask hubby if he was happy to go through with the service before she started

My Mum got married 'in secret' to her second husband when I was about 14. I say in secret, her sisters and Mum were told & invited but not her 2 children. She left me a voicemail afterwards (it was a school day so my phone was off) saying "Hi xoxo, We've just got married and we're off on honeymoon now, see you in 2 weeks", and that was it. I couldn't call her or speak to her until she got back. I've never been more hurt by anything she's done before or since. Absolutely no reason for it, just didn't tell us.:j0

That's awful
Do you mind me asking what kind of relationship you had/have with your Mum? I can't imagine a Mother doing that to her children.0
