You're dress is quite detailed and I'd be a bit worried about the bridesmaid one being too detailed in a distracting way. I'd be more inclined to go for a plainer style for them with sparkly hair accessories to make it stand out

It's a lovely dress you have choosen, but I can also understand about them not wanting stapless. Some strapless dress you see people spending all their time pulling them up so if there is room to put straps on the maybe that would help.

I personally would go for dark pink. The flowers in September are stronger in colour, oranges, red, dark pinks. To me pale pink is a spring/early summer colour. Also, strapless dresses can leave a lot of bare skin showing, sometimes making the perkiest of ladies look like their boobs are round their belly! I would be inclined to go for something long, sleek and fitted in contrast to your dress. Megan

  • the only thing bad about sleek and fitted is that one bridesmaid is about a size 20ish after having her son, so wouldn't really go well i don't think. she's 5'9" as well. the other bridesmaid is 5'2" and a size 8/10. So 2 very different dresses. lol.
What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..
  • If she wants to wear her choice of dress it would be lovely on her as a guest. If she wants to fulfill the role of bridesmaid she needs to wear your choice of dress. Do you have a reserve bridesmaid?

that's the exact reason she won't want strapless, pastel colours or ruching. Due to her size I think you definitely look in shops first to see what suits. The 50s dress is likely because they are extremely flattering on bigger girls. If she is a 20 I can see why she's saying she doesn't want to wear your choice. She would feel extremely uncomfortable in that style as would I and I'm a 14/16.

I LOVE that bridesmaid dress, in fact can I be cheeky and ask where you found it? But I agree with pbny24, sleek and pastel might not be the best choice for the other maid.

edit - don't worry, found it!

Well apparently they both sat down one night and looked at dresses and both like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WHITE-PINK-FLORAL-ROCKABILLY-VTG-PROM-DRESS-SIZE-8-20-/330599318666?pt=UK_Women_s_Dresses&var=&hash=item7dbcf5b408

I shot it down straight away. horrible is not even the word. But she wants that sort of style now, the 50's rock poffy dress.

TBH, you're calling your BM demanding but you're being very unkind about her choice of dress. Personally, I much prefer the rockabilly one as I hate baby pink, satin, crystals and strapless styles. But I'm not your BM, so my opinion doesn't count here. :)

A size 20 BM is going to feel VERY uncomfortable beside a size 8 BM, whatever they wear - but a strapless pastel satin dress will make her look even bigger, and she shouldn't be forced to wear something that she really hates imho. She would also spend all day hoiking it up, which will embarrass her.

I know my BM inside out as she is one of my closest friends. I know her tastes, which is why it was pretty easy for us to choose a dress for her that we both agreed on. Did it *really* come as a surprise to you that your BM hated the dress you chose???

I agree with those who say that you should try to come to a compromise. Satin and strapless would be a no-no for someone of that size tbh. Have you thought of trying chiffon with a structured underlayer? It would look good on both BMs. Dessy has a lot of BM dresses in chiffon/lux chiffon and lots of colours - you could have them in the same colour but different styles (and this would look very pretty, I'm seeing it more and more on wedding blogs).

I hope that you can find something that you all like. If you're paying, you get the final say, and your BMs should be flexible about styles/colours, but your BM is clearly feeling bad about having to stand next to a size 8 girl (as would I if I were in her shoes - always feel v. sorry for a BM who is a lot bigger than the rest). So be kind to her. :)

29504 ronald joice, it isn't sleek and fitted all the way tho, the bottom is rather ruffled, is that the word.

I agree with megan on the colour, September would be nice with a dark pink colour.

That pink, and fabric, would make some washed out.

EDIT to say I havd just read she size 20 which I do think is a huge reason for not wear the pink one. I think the shape, cut, everything is wrong. Has she EVER said she likes this style in the time you have known her? I really think you should rethink it, she will be very uncomfortable, and as for her paying for something so unsuitable, I agree with her again.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
