Next beginner question - how well does it stay put? Am I likely to have to retouch it during the day?

And finally for now is there any brand that doesn't contain mica? I was quite upset by the recent press reports highlighting the exploitation of children in the mica industry.
  • i used bare escentuals and love it,
they have a stand in my local Fenwicks-if u have one near u, then u could ask them directly
  • I am fairly new to mineral foundation but I bought Bare Escentuals/ ID Bare Minerals a few months back and it is really good. I bought the starter kit so you get 2 pots of foundation colour (you choose the kit that best matches your skin tone to start), 1 pot warmth (sort of blusher!), 1 pot mineral veil and 3 brushes.
So basically you have everything you need to get started for about £40.
Although its a powder it doesnt feel like a powder, my combination skin looks much better and I never look 'shiny' at the end of the day, I never retouch either.

I haven't used it too long either. But have found it very easy to get on with, and covers far better than my old foundation (usually Maybelline mousse or liquids) ever did. It stays on all day too which is great. I never retouch mine unless I am going on a night out and only have a few minutes to get ready.
You need to make sure you moisturise your face properly, and possibly use primer too if like me you have rough, uneven skin. Make sure you use gental cleansers that don't strip your face of its natural oils... as the make up works with the oils on your face to give an even uncaked coverage.

There's a lot of info on the Sheer Cover thread. (Sorry I don't have the link at the moment so just search for it).
Sheer cover is an american brand but is more expensive and I think you have to sign up to a contract with them. But their website is very informative about how mineral make-up works and how to apply it. They mention that their makeup is unique and different to other mineral makeups... but to behonest, there's not a lot different, the principles are the same, and the advice they give can apply to whichever mineral make-up brand you choose.

I've got a Kabuki brush from Elemental beauty:
    http://www.elementalbeauty.co.uk/brushes-and-accessories/deluxe-kabuki-brush-1.html
Its a decent brush but I find it a little corse and am looking at getting a different, slightly softer one, and perhaps one with a longer handle as it is quite difficult to get on with the stubby handle of these.

    HTH.

  • I am a big fan of eyeslipsface.co.uk

mineral make up is alot cheaper than the big name brands but just as good. I too was worried that the powder wouldnt 'stick' to my face or give enough coverage so I use tinted moisturiser(also from ELF) as a base to the mineral powder. By only using moisturiser and mineral foundation I have found my skin seems to behave now! You can also get relatively cheap kabuki brushes from here. Would definately recommend if anyone wants to try mineral foundation but doesnt want to spend a fortune!

I have quite fair pinkish toned skin too. I also have quite a lot of reddish scars from spots. I am still experimenting with the samples I got from Elemental beauty but I like Barley and Nude most.
I ordered 5 samples from their site: Barley, Nude, Sunshine, English rose and Luminous. They're all very pale, but slightly different in their own way. I liked Barley and Nude because they are quite neutral, Nude is exactly that... nude, it's a good base coat. And Barley, being slightly yellow in tone, adds colour.
I could actually happily use any of the 5 that I tried out as they all suit and work with my skin in their own way... I've tried mixing some too which can be effective.

Everyone's skin is different so I couldn't say for sure which one you'd be best off getting... Best thing I can suggest is to get some samples for yourself and to try them out. They're 85p and last for aaaagess! I've been switching between my samples each day for the last couple of months... and still have half of most of them left. Probably one sample would last around 3 weeks alone.

I notice no one has mentioned barefaced beauty.

I swear by their foundation. When I first tried their products I ordered a foundation testing kit which has all their shades (about 12 at the time) in 3g pots (if I remember right) plus some shades of blush so you could get the perfect match. Really handy. Ive just bought my second pot if foundation and setting power as my last lot lasted over a year! All hail mineral makeup.

They do very nice brushes aswell. But I have to say that elemental beauty is by far the best when it comes to eyeshadow. So many shades to choose from - I have to limit myself to a few new colours - otherwise I'd have it all.
