Mineral makeup - any good?
Comments
-
thanks for the tips ladies...
unfortunately i have found a non MSE solution!!!!
Was in a posh department store over easter - and asked did any have mineral make up - as I wanted to get them to show me how they apply it.
Was pointed to Laura Mercier - who happened to have their top make up artist visiting from London and would I like to have him show me... Well 30 minutes later - I felt and looked amazing!!!!
He used a mineral primer with a smallish flattish brush first. Then the mineral makeup with a softer brush not a kabuki - and it really was a small amount and applied very lightly. Finished off with some dabs of concealer, and a sweep of blusher/bronzer. Also for a night out - how to use their finishing powder.
(Also showed me a great way to do my eyes without looking 'made up' but they stood out so much!)
They had a starter kit - but I decided to go out into daylight and see how it 'really looked'. Well it was stunning! So I went back in and bought the starter kit - and have used it over the weekend and felt so confident.
I had intended to buy myself a posh easter egg from hotel chocolat - but since I ended up spending £65 thats the only present I'm having for a while!!!! (The kit has the primer, the foundation, a bronzer, and an illuminating powder, a primer brush, a kabuki and a powder brush and a bag to put it all in - although i think the powders are not full size pots - but they're still gonna last me for months given the tiny amounts I was shown to use to give full coverage)0 -

I cannot see anything whatsoever in your post that's "unfortunate" - I think you had a very fortunate day :T
I would call Laura Mercier's range "mineral based" rather than "mineral makeup", nevertheless you're pleased with it and the price doesn't seem outlandish considering everything you've got.
Well done you

Huge Elemental Beauty fan!
Healing foundation or illuminating, both work for me. I just kinda swish it on, bit extra on my T zone.
Make sure you wash your brush often, I made that mistake a few times, if it feels scratchy, it's probably minging and in need of a good wash.
I use perfect and protect serum from boots in the morning as it takes seconds to dry in and leaves a nice base for the foundation.
Green stuff is amazing but takes longer to get used to applying than the foundation.0 -
Thanks, Suki. The EM colours I've tried are:
Medium beige summer
Sandy medium
Sandy olive
Jane Iredale:
Latte
Golden Glow
Estee Lauder:
No. 3
Doesn't the QVC site advice what colour to use if your skin type is like that of Salma Hayek/Penelope Cruz?
I know myself I find Jane iredale way too orange for me so I stay clear.
When I was buying samples from Elemental Beauty and Lily lolo I ended up buying a lot lighter then the spectrum I tried first. Im a medium skin tone with yellow undertones and I tan easily. If I were buying a liquid foundation I would have gone for beige or sand or in Estee Lauder - Fresco. With EB I fist ordered the sand, beige and honey and am now in fact wearing Kitten:rotfl: Go look and see how different the colours were. Thats not to say I didnt wear all the samples I ordered, they all sort of worked, just I found the kitten to be the most invisible and I warm it up when needed with bronzer
I think you are just going to bite the bullet and order a few samples of colours a few notches down from the colour you think you are (if you are comparing with a liquid foundation)
I think for Salma Hayek skin colours it would be tan. Thats the colour best suited my niece whos half arab half caucasion if that helps0 -
Thanks, Suki, that's great!
I'll go and get myself another batch of samples then, aiming for something paler... might even get the almost white one and blend it with the one's I have to tone them down! I might get to customise them to the right hue!:rotfl:0 -
I need to order my original colour - and be b*ggered if can remember the shade! And can't work out what it says on the label! I've not quite run out - but it must be at least a year now since I ordered it! Value for money I would say
I'm hoping Nicola is efficient and has a record of what I ordered!! It was a pale shade - which I mix with cinnamon for a blusher or when I am more tanned or want to look healthier!
Tiamai_d said about the brushes - am ashamed - mine are mucky, and yes have been a bit scratchy!! I do have another day off tomorrow before go back to work so may wash them or it (fav pink one - but have a brand new fav pink one not used yet! So s*d the washing!!).
Think will email Nicola now.......... anyone thinking of ordering with EB and unsure of things, Nicola is really really helpful either on phone or by email. And no, I'm not on commission!Genie

I use mostly the Kabuki from ELF, the face brush from Elemental Beauty, the flawless face brush from Bare escentuals and the concealer brush from lilly lolo - just to give you an idea of how little or how much you can spend and the various brands around (theres a lot more, everyone has their favs) I also use a huge bronzer brush from Superdrug to put on bronzers and blush
Colour wise, Im a brunette who tans easily so I use medium colours with a yellow base
Sorry to drag up your old post suki, I'm just looking at brushes on the various websites I'm planning to order them today. Would you (or anyone else) mind just advising as to what you use each type of brush for? For example what do you use the face brush for and the flawless face brush, are they better for some things than a kabuki would be? Would I be ok with one big kabuki for foundation and veil, a medium brush for bronzer, and a smaller concealer brush? I don't wear eyeshadow hardly ever, just liner and mascara so I don't think I need anything specific for eyes, and I don't do lipstick either
Thank you! Really appreciate all the help.Mother, wife, scientist, analyst.

A kabuki gives maximum cover, a flawless face brush can give the same amount of cover but you may need to layer up more. for me it depends on what state my face is in as to what brush I use and also if Im doing evening make up ( a bit more) or day time.
I always use a different brushes for mineral veil and foundation as there will always be a bit of foundation left on the brush and I always use a flawless face type brush for mineral veil.
As for blushers and bronzers, I use just ones I had already
I think you will be fine with just two brushes for now - get a kabuki and a flawless face type one one. I like both the EB and the ELF kabukis ( EB is long handled) I only ever have had Bare escentuals flawless face brushes so cant comment on other brands although Jeannieblue likes the EB one.
Theres a lovely post in the harryharp thread about make up brushes and a link to a site that sells top quality brushes for a very good price. Im hopeless at linky things so heres the thread - get looking :rotfl:
