Thanks guys, I've tried the mineral powder samples - from one of the online stores -lola-or something like that, but didn't really like the finish it gave. I have very variable skin and liquid seems to suit it better. Maybe I'll try a powder again.

Well it just goes to show what a variable bunch we girls are - I was so grateful to find powder foundation because I just cannot wear "wet" stuff, it does like crazy paving on my generous nose  ... apart from turning into a grease-patch.

    Aren't we all variable indeed

I tried Elemental Beauty and it made my nose look like a strawberry! Loved the feel but can't bear to look like that.

The two I'd recommend are ebay places I've never seen mentioned on here:

Firstly FACE VALUE cosmetics. American but their prices and customer service are great and the postage is surprisingly quick. They do both very reasonably priced kits - don't know how to post short links so look for item 400034516491 which is buy now, but there are plenty on auction and I got one years ago for much less by watching and waiting. Also samples - see item 400027064031 - they will let you sample absolutely anything from the product range!

Secondly Minerals Will Work 4 U They are based in Ireland I think. See item 290301943822 for samples - again will let you sample anything you like. I have samples of all sorts of finishing powders from them and I'm pretty sure they contain minerals rather than cornstarch - although the prime and set contains arrowroot which feels pretty much like cornstarch!

I've just gone back to the American Face Value stuff as the colours are better for me. £17.25 for good size foundation and concealer incl postage. Could have got it cheaper as a kit with some extras but I really wanted the light/medium (being difficult I fall between the two) so bought separately. Arrived within about 3-4 days and its perfect!

That's funny, cos powder make up goes just like crazy paving on my nose, but liquid foundation just slides off! I seem to have a nose that's both greasy and dry, and any powder type foundation, including mineral makeup, just sits in the pores and highlights any flaky bits. I try to exfoliate regularly and moisturise but to no avail, has anyone solved this...?

    That's my ex-nose you've got there.

I promise you I know exactly how you feel. No-one ever understood the problem - I stopped wearing any face makeup for about 10 years, then when I discovered MMU I started again. I remember that Dior Capture 'serum' helped, I used to put it on straight after cleansing/washing (whatever I did all those years ago when I was working) in the morning but I cannot remember what other moisturiser I used. It seemed to stop the peely bits from sprouting up immediately and I could get my foundation on, feel I looked respectable before leaving the house, and then pretend I still looked like it all day.

Some MMU does not highlight the pores like, for example, BE does - that does it so well it almost looks like you intended to have pin-pricks all over and beside your nose :(

Edit: Just occurred to me - Decleor Prolagene Gel is supposed to be good at reducing pores over the long term - I have not tried it, have never found it cheap enough. Don't know about the peely side of the prob.

    Yes :D

I HAD very oily skin and all foundations slid off - till I used the OCM (oil cleansing method) That has cleared up the oil slick that was my face and now not only is my face 99.9 % less greasy, but the pores being kept so clean look minimal (its the plugs of sebum in pores that make them look awful)

The other thing is to keep on moisturising and exfoliating, You may need to change your moisturiser.

One last thing, if you also have a flakey scalp its worth popping into the doctors and get him look at your flakey nose and scalp, could be a type of dermatitis called Seborrheic Dematitis. Not easily cleared up but easily kept under control once you get the right treatment (usually an anti fungil )

Is MMU really cheap to produce?
Looks like loads of companies out there produce them, and they can afford to send (or very cheaply sell) loads of samples. Therefore I'm wondering if its worth it buying the premium brand ones, as I really liked Estee Lauder's MMU (admitedly I'm rubbish with powders, so I'm talking about the liquid one).
What do you all MMU experts think? Cheers!

    MMU can not be liquid

Estee Lauder is not a premium mineral brand, none of the known shop brands are.

The comestic giants are jumping on the band wagon and are adding minerals to cheap fillers such as talc (which in all truth is a mineral ) or liquid foundation.

Premium mineral brands are those like Jane Iredale, Bare Escentuals, lilly lolo - and others named on this thread. Names you wont see in supermarkets or department stores usually ( I think John lewis now stocks BE)

Minerals are cheap when you look at the big picture. A sample will be a quarter of a teaspoon , but if its a pure mineral its enough to cover a few faces. I have had samples of bronzers where you could barely see the amount at the bottom of a small bag, yet used it for weeks. A 9gr pot of foundation will last a year perhaps, if its a blusher or concealer in thatsize, I cant see it ever being used up.But that pot can cost 20 - 30 quid and then you need the brushes. So the initial outlay for a full sized is expensive (hence we always say buy samples first) they last for ever and wont go off if you decide not to use them for a year or two ( I have foundations that are perhaps 5 years old and still safe to use)

    Me too, Suki.

I'm letting you do the explainin' cos I'm so mentally tired, what with e-cigs and researching a "new" laptop (the latter involving replies from scornful young men waving their willies who haven't read the question :( ).

But I heartily support what you say!
