Hi
My credit card has been charged £29.56 so under £30 - how do I query import duty - or don't I have the right to query it?
Thanks

From Martin's shopping from the US article. Sorry I didn't realise that its £36 for gifts but £17 for products.
Bringing your goods back into this country doesn’t come cheap. This is crucial to take notice of, as it can send the cost of your goods sky-high – and swallow up all the savings secured elsewhere. Here are the import charges that will hike up the cost of your steals from the US.Customs duty.
Customs duty is a tax on imports for which goods coming into the UK from non-EU countries are eligible. You'll only be charged this if the tax calculated comes to over £7. The amount of the duty depends on the category of goods; some electrical items, for example, digital cameras, laptops, mobiles and games consoles like Wii/ Xbox360 are duty free. A full categorised list is available at HMRC site.
For expensive items, get an estimate of customs prices by calling HM Revenue & Customs’ National Advice Service directly on 0845 010 9000 or, if calling from abroad, +44 (0) 208 929 0152.Import VAT on goods over £18.
Separate to customs duty you’ll also need to cough up 17.5% on goods costing £18 and more (including shipping charges), or if you can prove the item’s a gift, the threshold's £36. It’s important to understand the VAT is on the full amount, not just the excess over the limit.
HMRC deems it a gift if: it's from an individual to an individual, is for the private use of you or your family, there is no commercial or trade element and the gift has not been paid for either directly or indirectly.Customs clearance charges.
When shopping online from the UK, if there are duty and/or VAT charges, the delivery company will pay this on your behalf and reclaim the funds from you before delivering your parcel, plus charge a handling fee on top. Fees vary depending on the company; but usually are between £8 and £14. These can be charged at a later date so watch out and be careful.0 -
Thanks so much JoeyEmma for this comprehensive reply, this was actually a gift from my DH to me for mother's day, how do I prove this, I ordered it in my name and he paid for it on his paypal a/c.
Sorry if this cannot be answered here as I don't want to hijack the post but it's worth bearing in mind if others are thinking of ordering from the USA.

I'd call the HMRC number above and ask them how to claim it back0

Reviving this thread as it has so many useful tips on it - which have helped me - and the latest, if you've not read it already on another thread, is that I am now using elemental beauty - you hardly need to use any - and it doesn't itch! Which was a bug bear for me! Lily lolo didn't agree with me at all sadly.Genie

Hiya!
I use Lily Lolo and find that fine. I have noticed that many people have problems with components of the mineral make-up so thought I'd post this link as I can't find a mention of them on here.

I like this stuff too and will be ordering from here. Need to do a proper comparison with Lolo stuff.
They sell on ebay and it is very cheap to try them out. They make a point of listing everything in the make-up by 'My Beautiful Earth'
'RETURNALLHEALTH. The very best in Alternative Health & Beauty from 100% Natural Mineral Make-up by My Beautiful Earth, Natural Organic Handmade Pure Plant Skin Care, Anti-Aging, Acne, Dry Skin, Natural Air Fresheners, Seaweed Treatments, Natural Soaps, Sodium Ascorbate, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)'

i use lilylolo foundation in candy cane, earthnicity concealer and bare escentuals mineral veil and i swear i would never go back to normal makeup again. i often have dry flaky patchy areas around my mouth, been there since a child, my old makeup used to flare these up, but since i have used the mineral makeup my skin has been great. seen some maybelline mineral makeup in the shops the other week but so confusing what shade to buy. the lilylolo you can buy samples so you can experiment in diferent lights they are about a £1 each but so worth it. i always used rimmel coverup but was suprised how the mineral coverup can be so effective, also gives a very natural finish with no streaks, invest in some good brushes(bare escensuals concealer brush ebay £4 with delivery)wish i had tried this makeup long before now...:o0

I'm a tad tired and have been reading bits and bobs on a couple of threads, but would appreciate some help
I am delighted to say that the Elemental Beauty is suiting me v well. My skin is still not near normal, but thats life. The only problem (well not THE only problem but one I have at mo that want sorted) is that the make up is settling in my lines. Now I remember someone posting something about this and being recommended to use ................... Exactly!
Can someone fill in the blank for me?? TaGenie
