You can change the SMTP server by going to Account Settings, clicking on the Email account and change the SMTP server to a different one:

Some SMTP servers require authentication - try BT, Pipex or Tiscali.
Logically this is not an SMTP issue - it works fine when using Ethernet! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

I read the previous post as, yes they also have a problem using an Ethernet cable too.
As they don't in that case, it will be Wi-Fi related. Possibly MTU setting? If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
So you have wireless interference that is causing your connection to drop (Error 0x800CCC0F returned from the mail server) while sending long e-mails e.g. with attachments.
Try downloading and running inSSIDer here to check local wireless activity and change your wireless channel to a clear one.
Tnx espresso, I'll try that also but wondering why there isn't interference when attachments come in ie I just had a friend send me an 8MB file and it was received no problem and downloaded at normal speed.
FIO: This is the actual error msg I get (with personal details omitted).
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. (email subject and account name) Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F0 -

This is probably unrelated but I'm just wondering why you are using Gmail's SMTP server rather than your ISP's?If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -

Well it is easy enough to eliminate the wireless interference as a reason.
It may be due to the fact that when you send an e-mail with an attachment, your AV kicks in and by the time that it has scanned the attachment the wireless connection has dropped before it has been actually sent.
When receiving an e-mail with an attachment, it may scan the attachment after it has downloaded it. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

No idea..lol Just the way it's always been since I started using gmail. My ISP does offer their own email client and service but it had horrendous problems a few years back and I have never used it since. The settings I have now have always worked...til now0 -
Generally, it is always recommended that you use your ISP's SMTP server unless you have a problem or there is a specific reason why you need to use another one.
Note, this is not changing your account/E-mail address. It's just the outgoing server that is used to deliver the E-mail.If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -

Click on the 2.4GHz Channels tab around half-way down.
Are there many routers showing on the graph using the same channel as yours?
You can also check in the list view above. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0
