Or, just another idea, could you "upgrade" to Windows Live Mail - Microsoft's upgrade for OE, much better than OE, okay for XP (SP2 or 3) - just use the mail function and either don't install all the other bits and bobs (or just uninstall afterwards) - just might fix any corruption in OE............just an idea....

PS removes OE size restrictions too.

Could you take a look at the size of your OE folders - if close to the max that may be an issue?

Ah, yeah I have a load of emails filed in OE folders tho I do compact when the message to do so pops up. How do I check what the size is and what the max is pls?

    Thanks

    usually in here

    C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{D87F7CC9-1401-40A0-B2CC-A7CC32B49DDB}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\

The "funny" number may be different on yr PC, and there is an option to change the location, but the above is the default.

Alternatively you could do a file search for *.dbx

PS max size is 2gb, some also say if the number of messages exceeds 2k then you may begin to experience probs - but I have seen probs on the 2gb issue, but not been able to prove/disprove the messaage number issue.

Thanks Rob, firstly I tried to compact but what was available to compact was negligible. I then backed up my email and then deleted all but 50 ..and no difference. Still same problem so unfortunately can't be anything to do with the size

What operating system are you using?

The next step may be to upgrade to Windows Live Mail as others have suggested.

Do you receive any error messages when you try to send a message with an attachment such as 0x800...?

Really appreciate ur help here Rob, but not sure I understand what ur saying about "might just fix any corruption in OE"? I tried Windows Live Mail way back when and really didn't like it hence returning to OE. I know it's an "upgrade" but still a totally different programme..so is it really likely to kick the OE problem into touch?

You may have an OE corruption - I've never found the OE repair tools very successful. My I suggest my earlier post about using Live Mail (part of Windows Essentials) - it is the replacement for OE, is available on XP and above, still has the Outlook look and feel, but with some added Outlook features. Importing your old OE folders shouldn't be too difficult, if I remember rightly you can import direct from the dbx files.

Hi, using windows XP pro. Error messages vary on each account but I have googled them all and not got very far as u can see

I have just installed Outlook which I had on an office disk and same problem there (prob not surprising since I imported everything incl settings from OE).

One of the error numbers is 0x800CCC0F

Thanks again Rob. If I have to change I will probably just stick to an amalgamated gmail acct - preferable (to me at least) than Windows Live Mail.

The fact that you get the same message in Outlook is interesting..

    Try a couple of things:

    1. In the advanced tab for thr gmail account increase the server time-out and see if different settings makes any difference.

2.Temporarily , create a couple of new folders, drag and drop the contents of your main inbox and sent items, so that yr folders are empty. Compact these two main folders so that hopefully they are pristine? Then try sending an attachment?
