To be honest ( others may disagree ) but I reckon that you will be hard pressed to find any LCD TV that will match your Toshiba CRT when fed with SD material, let alone one at this price range.

Seriously? WOAH. Surely if TVS are nerly all now LCD or PLASMA then they must be better quality? Otherwise surely nobody would upgrade?

Unfortunately it's not like that. People tend to upgrade for space and cool purposes, and find themselves disappointed. LCDs and Plasmas are much better than they were, but the unfortunate truth is that (certainly for SD sources) then CRTs still leave them for dead for picture quality and viewing angle.

You pays your money, you take your choice.

Agreed Majik, you got it spot on. ;)
  • No no no. People don't just upgrade to be "cool" or to save space. I've bought this TV so I can view Xbox 360 games in HD and watch HD DVDs. Additionally, I'm now ready for HD TV when I decide to subscribe.
And normal (SD) TV looks really great on it anyway. Granted, there are occasionally colour gradient borders but this is entirely offset by the pleasure of watching TV on a large, wide screen. And SD DVDs look fabulous.

Not all progress is for the better :) Seriously though people are buying for the "futureness" of the flat panel display. Associated with that is the introduction of new technology (HD). I have to say I am wowwed by the displays in John Lewis etc.

But then I've had a TFT monitor at home since about 1998 and when I bought a 27" for home use it was OK. Nothing spectacular not better than the Panasonic CRT in the living room. In the end I got rid of it but I'll buy back in this year or next probably. LCD resolutions are improving all the time but plasma blacks are best. In the end, as in most things in life, its a compromise.

Great thread guys and a nice looking set!

One question I have (just to convice me to press BUY)......there's a couple of mentions regarding PC use with this set.....

As the set will be mainly used for PC use I'm pretty picky when it comes to this issue ....from all I've read it seems I should expect 1:1 pixel mapping when running at 1360x768......is that correct?..... also from those that have connected their PC would you say the picture is really 'crisp' ,1:1?....

Sorry to bang in but this really is a massive issue for me. :D

    TIA

Well I bought one of these and had it delivered today.

My 1:1 pixel mapping question above was not a worry, as the set does indeed do this via VGA & HDMI (via DVI adapter).....HOWEVER there is a major flaw with this set it would seem (unless someone knows otherwise?)

It can't a accept a 50hz input from a PC only 60hz @ 1360x768 (other resolutions are 60 & 75hhz but not 1:1 (mushy))....no big problem, right? well sadly yes it is.... if u try and display most HD material via the PC the picture judders & breaks up something rotten! if I force it to 50hz (the screen goes all mushy and way off to the right) that HD playing is now smooth but unwatcahable as it's all mushy and way off the screen.

I've tried VGA, HDMI and HDTV (component) from my graphics card, all with the same results - even playing a SD TV feed through media center judders especially noticeable on the sky news tikertape etc.

I also have a Pace HD box with HDMI out, I cant even get the TV to work with this via HDMI - the set displays 'out of range' - this is because it wont take a 50Hz feed via HDMI, which is also ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure if a Sky HD box can pump out 60Hz, if it does not it also wont work with this set.

This TV must have been intended for a non-European market, I can't believe it won't run @ 50Hz or for that matter how badly it performs @ 60Hz - my last LCD would play anything chucked at it @60Hz (a slight judder but hardly noticable).

Needless to say if I cant find a solution the TV will be going back.

PS. XBOX 360 looks stunning on component btw, luckily the 360 outputs @ 60Hz.

I'll check this when I go home but at 60 hertz my display was perfect with any HD material I threw at it. I'll try some different settings later and get back to you.

I would wager that people like you are in the minority. I took a quick straw poll around the office and, out of 7 people who had bought flat panel TVs, only one had an HD source. The rest bought them just for the coolness, because "everyone was buying them" or for space saving. All of which are perfectly valid reasons to buy a flat panel, but it really can't be argued that current flat panel monitors (size for size) are a match for a decent CRT with an SD source.
