I've just been told that my 3 year old Hyundai with 11,000 miles will not be covered by Hyundai as the clutch plate spring had broken - They said that this is considered part of the Clutch Plate and so is not covered beyond 2 years. This is Rodgers of Plymouth who are telling me that Hyundai point blank refused to contribute anything. I think this is appalling. Not sure what to do next... Trading standards? legal action in the small claims court? approach Hyundai directly.

I certainly will NEVER buy a Hyundai again and I'd advise everyone else to steer clear.

Trading standards, watchdog basically anyone who will listen.

Hyundai should not be allowed to get away with it
  • Hi, I've had a brand new hyundai i10 for 7 weeks and the gearbox blew up. The warrenty department turned me down due to my driving style saying it was due to wheel spins. Bristol street motors want 2500 for repairs. Does anyone have and advice?
  • Follow FloralDancers example and take them to small claims court.
But also generate max publicity along the way.

They are clearly sucking in buyers with the advertised long warranty and then avoiding all responsibility

These cars are clearly "not fit for purpose"
  • I was sorry to hear of the recent clutch failure on the above vehicle considering the low mileage achieved. I have therefore contacted Roy in service at Rodgers of Plymouth Hyundai to discuss your email further.

I have been advised that when the clutch on your vehicle was examined it was found that spring with in the friction plate had snapped due to wear and tear. All technicians working in our network of dealerships are highly trained and experienced, repairing and servicing Hyundai vehicles on a daily basis. In light of this, I am confident in your dealer’s decision that the clutch failure on your vehicle was not due to a manufacturing defect.

I can also advise that we have no concern with the clutches fitted within our vehicle range, and as you are aware clutches can fail for a number of reasons, and I am only able to apologise for your disappointment. I can only assure you that had the dealership felt the clutch was defective in any way then this matter would have been addressed by the terms of your Hyundai warranty.

It must be appreciated that all modern vehicles are much lighter on the clutch than those found on older cars. With this in mind older vehicles tend to have heavier clutches, and therefore if you rest your foot lightly on the clutch it can cause the failure you have experienced. Older heavy clutches need a great deal of pressure to engage, and therefore some drivers may have got into the habit of lightly resting their foot on the clutch without being aware of the damage that can be caused. I must stress however that this situation is not only true of Hyundai cars but any new vehicle. Please do not feel that I am saying this applies to your driving style, this is merely a statement.

The Hyundai warranty is very extensive and is one of the best in the UK. However, as with all manufacturers, we do not cover wear and tear items under the terms of this warranty. This is outlined in your Aftersales Warranty and Service book on page 7.

I am sorry for any disappointment this satiation has caused, but I trust it clarifies our position with regard to this matter, and as to why the clutch repair was not covered under the terms of your Hyundai warranty. On this occasion I am also unable to accede to your request of goodwill.

All cases are reviewed upon their individual merit taking many factors into consideration. However we are unable to contribute towards a repair that has been confirmed as wear and tear. Thank you for taking the time to write with your concerns giving me an opportunity to investigate and respond.

    Yours sincerely

  • Hyundai customer services : "I can also advise that we have no concern with the clutches fitted within our vehicle range,"

Its only your customers (and ex potential customers i.e. me ) who have these concerns then ?

Did you make reference to resting your foot on the clutch and/or is that something that you do?
  • No, I made no mention of a problem resting my foot on the clutch pedal. I only mentioned that I had 'never' had a clutch problem with any other car that I had ever owned.
  • I do not believe that I drive this car in any way other than that instructed to me when I passed my test. From doing some very quick research I have found lots of corroborating information on the internet which confirms that Hyundais have an abnormal number of clutch failure problems. This is clearly an issue for your company. I was also instructed by Rodgers of Plymouth that it was Hyundai who refused the request for the event to be covered by the warrantee and yet your email suggests that it was Rodgers that was responsible for the decision. There is clearly an unacceptable level of customer care between the two of you. This will certainly be the last Hyundai that I or anyone else in my family buys. I would also like to ensure that both Hyundai and Rodgers of Plymouth never contact us again with sales or marketing information. This will be regarded as harassment. I will also take further legal advice and will share this information with consumer affairs publications and the press. I will also report the issue to the trading standards department for you falsely advertising a 5 year warrantee and exempting an issue that you know to be below an acceptable standard.

    Yours sincerely,
  • Your grandfather 'should' be OK as even the Hyundai limitations still put clutch problems as being covered for the first 24 months or 60,000 miles (yes read that and weep - as if it would make it that far),

I did put a link but the forum won't let me keep it. but basically it is on the Hyundai site on the 5 year triple care - limited coverage - there is a table near the bottom which lists all the exceptions to the 5 year warrantee - stick www before:

    hyundai.co.uk/misc-pages/five_year_triple_care/limited_coverage

My problem is that it just over 3 years and so was no longer covered by the 24month coverage. It sounds like your grandfather really is being ripped off. Ask for all the pieces so that it can be verified. and report to your local trading standards

He's been told it's £600 to repair and I can't believe that there are so many people who appear to be experiencing the same problems with the clutch on the i10s and i20s and who are effectively being told it's their driving style
Was that from the main agent and what exactly has failed as the link posted above:

    http://www.hyundai.co.uk/misc-pages/five_year_triple_care/limited_coverage

Suggests that the clutch plate will be a 'wear and tear' and not covered. If it is another component then it might be covered.
