Well, he came through a couple of minutes ago and I took the opportunity to ask him if? Where? Would he like me to buy...? He looked at me as if I was daft then explained very gently that the Teen Clinic in our town is just opposite the school and it's pretty well accepted that everyone goes there for condoms if they want them. Apparently it's quite the little social event on Friday afternoons to go to the clinic with your friends, and the school reminds them of the opening times every Friday assembly. In fact, he tells me, everyone goes anyway for condoms whether they use them or not because you get laughed at if you don't, once you get to that sort of age. So yes, he's been, no, he didn't use them for that, but he did have a good look at them and knows what to do with them when the time comes.

I can only applaud the school and local FP clinic for their joined up thinking here...but even then, there's two girls in his year (15/16 year olds) pregnant already. You can lead a horse to water....

That is a good idea. I don't know if there's anything like that here - I hope so. I'll go and ask at the FPC next week.

Also, 15 year olds get called in to the GP for a health check, but I don't suppose many of them will want to go. I don't know what they talk about but I presume that contraception and chlamydia will be part of it.

As for pregnant school girls there have always been a few. I know that my son's ex from when they were 14 (he didn't sleep with her) is desperate for a baby as soon as possible. They used to have arguments about it because she wanted to start in her teens whereas he thought 25+ would be better. I overheard them arguing once and my son told her that if they stayed together he was going to remain a virgin until 25 just so she couldn't have a kid with him before then!

I don't know why a 15 year old would want a baby, but it does happen. Not all teenage pregnancies are unplanned. This particular girl is very insecure about her body, has always been bullied at school and is very hurt by her estranged father's lack of interest in her. I think she has some romantic idea about what it would be like to have a baby to love her and to be the whole world to that baby.

I haven't read all the postings in this thread BUT on a lighter note . . . .

I gave my grandson one as a Christmas stocking filler when he was fourteen which gave all the family a laugh.
At the time he was into SAS survival techniques so I was able to explain that I'd read that as an emergency, a condom could be used as a water carrier that could hold one litre.

I worked with a lady whose son was trying this out. It is true they can hold a lot of water, as she found out when he dropped it while he was walking down the stairs........
I don't think he was too popular that day.
  • I would hope if he was already active then he's using condom's already. School nurses give them out if asked nowadays.

Be open and honest with your son.

For those of you that do have sons, make sure they dont store condoms in their wallets for long periods of time because it can get warm from body heat and the friction could possibly cause minute tears. It should be ok if it was in there for a night out, weekend etc, but not for months on end. Would be better than nothing at all, but encourage them to change them every so often.

This is often left out. You can get small boxes, intended for this, that fits in a wallet to prevent the unopened condom from being damaged easily.

We have been open with him regaurding STD and pregnancy etc. Its not that we have avoided the topic at all. As a midwife I am pretty well informed!!! And have never been embaressed talking to him about sex. I know he will do it eventually! Anyway bought some in Tescos last night, thankfully I did not meet anyone who knew me as my OH has had the snip many years ago!!!!

DD (16) came home from college with a variety (didn't know you could get hot chocolate flavour??) and, having no bananas, we had a giggle over her practicing on a cucumber :D

They were a source of great amusement for her and her friends (mostly boys) and were blown up, put on a hand (mum, xxxx's skin has gone all funny! touch his hand :rotfl::rotfl:) etc.

But with the humour we've also had serious chats about STD's and stuff (remember that slogan 'if it;s not on, it's not on?) and I think it;s good to be able to talk.

Another plus to buying the first lot for him is that he wont be worried about mum and dad finding them and knowing what he's up to.

Not all dads. DS1's dad has this funny notion that, having told DS1 he's not allowed to have sex until he's 16, DS1 will do exactly as instructed. Ermmmmm... DS1 is a normal, hyper hormonal teen who is infatuated with his VERY experienced girlfriend. Personally I think it's not a risk worth taking. Put this in a bit more perspective, his dad is a bit of a prude and his stepmum is worse, the extent of his sex education at home was "it's illegal for you have sex until your 16". I kid you not.
