The thread is about sons but those with daughters should also get them familiar with condoms and how to put them on. Girls are being told to make sure a partner wears one - that's more likely to happen in practise if they know how to handle a condom and put it on properly.0 -

Does anyone remember the first ever AIDS information campaign?
The tag line was, "Don't die of embarassment" and I've got to say it still works for me - adolescents are notoriously sensitive to anything embarassing. At least if parents take the lead and provide AND mention condoms, one element of the embarassment is taken out of the equation...and as another poster said, if condoms are provided, the teenagers can investigate/practise/use them without worry about the cost or the embarassment of getting some more!0 -

Agreed...and furthermore, I don't think it's off topic to include girls. It takes two people to need one, both should be aware what is going onand that it's gone on correctly.

Your school was way more liberal than mine - we got one talk from an outside speaker who basically said "Don't do it until you're married" and "After you're married, it's important to wash from navel to knees every day". As we weren't told what "it" was, the second lot of advice was very puzzling and the idea now of "every day" makes me laugh! Either the advisor was very highly sexed or very optimistic!0 -

If I had a son I'd want him to be confident enough to buy them and use them properly, which might be aided by being familiar with them before he (or she) needs them.
Well, he came through a couple of minutes ago and I took the opportunity to ask him if? Where? Would he like me to buy...? He looked at me as if I was daft then explained very gently that the Teen Clinic in our town is just opposite the school and it's pretty well accepted that everyone goes there for condoms if they want them. Apparently it's quite the little social event on Friday afternoons to go to the clinic with your friends, and the school reminds them of the opening times every Friday assembly. In fact, he tells me, everyone goes anyway for condoms whether they use them or not because you get laughed at if you don't, once you get to that sort of age. So yes, he's been, no, he didn't use them for that, but he did have a good look at them and knows what to do with them when the time comes.
I can only applaud the school and local FP clinic for their joined up thinking here...but even then, there's two girls in his year (15/16 year olds) pregnant already. You can lead a horse to water....Val.0 -
It's really good to read that boys (and some girls) and their mums (where are the dads in all this?) are sensible about buying and using protection. Problem is, the thread has put a picture in my mind of a 15 year old schoolboy each morning checking his schoolbag for bus fare, lunchbox, homework, calculator, gym kit and in-date condoms.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I think it is much more open these days. From a young age school will be telling them all about the mechanics of sex, including putting the condom on the banana, STDs etc. My boys (13/14) are convinced that you'll catch a disease & die if you so much as look at a girl while not wearing one! We talk about sex using words that would have had my Dad knocking me from here to kingdom come at his age. Hopefully this openeness will continue as they gets older.0

For those of you that do have sons, make sure they dont store condoms in their wallets for long periods of time because it can get warm from body heat and the friction could possibly cause minute tears. It should be ok if it was in there for a night out, weekend etc, but not for months on end. Would be better than nothing at all, but encourage them to change them every so often.0
