On a better note I have been finding out prices of gyms - problem is there are only 2 in the town which I live - one is the council one at the leisure centre, the other is Fitness first. FF is really run down and has been for a while - I was a member previously but left as I thought it was dirty/run down/broken machines - they know they have a captive market and people will go anyway so dont seem to do much about it - the leisure centre one has been done up I think - both are £32pm. There are other ones in the area - about 30mins away but I know that I will use that as an excuse not to go. There is also curves and a similar womens workout place. What are your views on these - is a "proper" gym better

Oh and thanks to retiredlady who has inspired me to find out about gyms and possibly join :T

Hello Honey28 - I feel so proud!! tee hee:T :T The gym I joined is at our leisure centre and is run by the local council. So I would recommend that one! I thought if it was run by the council it would be certain to follow all the health & safety regulations to the letter. ;) Plus it was closest to home and if you paid a year in advance you only pay for 10 months and get 2 free.;) This worked out cheaper than all the other gyms plus I didn't have to pay for parking. One day I might even manage to walk there and home again!
I say GO FOR IT - you can be my cyber gym partner!

  • Hi all and welcome to Katmad.

Having an awful day today, my Dad has some probem which we can't get to the bottom of. He's nearly 80 and lately his whole personality seems to have changed. He's become argumentative and verbally aggressive - something he would never have been before. Anyway it culminated today in him driving to our house from theirs (a distance of around 8 miles) and getting lost twice. I ended up taking them home because it frightened my Mum so much to be in the car with him driving. I've brought their car keys home with me so that he can't get the car out and when he realises what I've done, he's not going to be happy at all, but I don't feel he's fit to drive. I haven't been able to do much more for them today but I shall go back first thing in the morning and try to get the doctor to see him and assess what the problem is.

Am feeling thoroughly fed up and weepy. Sorry to offload on you all. My OH is very good but he just says "well he's had a good innings" and to be honest, it's not what I want to hear.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
  • Hi Consultant31

What a typical thing for a man to say!! I understand how you must be feeling and you can offload anything here that you want, you jolly well know that! (sorry but I'm in a bossy mood at the moment).

It's such a difficult situation for you and I don't really know what to say other than I hope that your Dad is feeling better now and will settle down for the evening, if however you get called back over to your parents then a call to your GP will be well in order - that's what they're trained for. Hopefully though you will have a good nights sleep and will feel better disposed to deal with the matter in the morning :grouphug:

Hi consultant - sending big hugs your way. Sorry to hear your dad isnt himself - we all just take it for granted that our parents will always be as we want them to be and so its hard when they start to change. My mum has changed a lot in the past few months since her fall - very clingy and nervous when normally a very independant woman, I have found this very hard to deal with too so know how you are feeling. That said, in both cases I hope its just a blip and we will have them back to his/her normal self soon. Your OH probably doesnt know what to say - I find that my OH says things like that too when I have weepy moments - either that or he makes himself very scarce! Hope it goes ok with the DR tomorrow.

Just back from dinner - the malteser cake was yummy - how about I send some via cyber space to you :rotfl:

Get a good nights sleep and see how things are in the morning

Thanks for the advice about the gyms, going to go and see the leisure centre one tomorrow :T

    Hi all

Bit of an upset this week (valentines meal out and chocolates) so went up a couple of pounds but my long term aim is still to get to 12 st 8. I think you need treats now and then but don't get carried away and afterwards continue eating sensibly. Losing weight is a long term thing and I'm determined to keep the weight off instead of yoyo'ing. See sig for diet details thus far.

By the way my calorie intake is usually sub 2000 each day, somedays as low as 1300 but that's not often as I consider it dangerous and makes the body go into starvation mode (ie lose water and muscle NOT fat) which is not what I want (I do weights also)

Also I find creating an excel graph of weight loss progress gives a psychological boost , hope it helps someone ;)

    Cheers

  • Good luck with the gym Nicola- the hardest part is joining. After that it gets easier. When I first joined I thought everyone would be skinny and in lycra but not at all. There are some 'posers' but most people are there for the same reason as we are and once you get the hang of it it's a great feeling after you've done a work out. Makes you feel kinda smug! I find the hardest part is getting myself there - once I'm there I genuinely enjoy it and love the feeling once I'm finished!

Was feeling quite positive about the WI in this morning as I went to the gym twice last week however I have maintained again. I know where I go wrong, this week again the wine but also chocolate chip cookies just because DH bought some and I could not leave them alone.
We also went to get new furniture yesterday at the new ILVA store they sell Danish Furniture and it was really like being at home. We got a lovely new dinning room table & chairs and a new huge bed. £1500 later but it is nice.
Honey I would take a look at the Local AUthority one, I belong to one. It has recently been taken over by a private company in conjunction with the council so they have spent a lot of money on doing it up. I pay £37 for gym, classes and swim which is cheaper than FF and LA here. LA you pay so much to park the others have free parking.
Consultant sorry to hear about your dad. It can be many things which I am sure his GP can check out. However have you checked about dehydration as many older peopel simply dont drink enough. Hope he gets better and that you get it checked out for piece of mind.
Working from home most of this week so will try to be extra good would be nice to show an improvement on that 2lb chart.
