I'd say it gets worse. Have still not used the girl's name I chose before No. 1 was born, and not likely to do so now! Was convinced I would get my chance with No. 2, who 'felt' different while I was pregnant, so had given very little thought to boys' names. Having agonised over boys' names for No. 1, a week or so before the second birth, I said to DH "I suppose we ought to chose a boy's name, just in case. Will P___ J___ do?" "Yes, that will do", he said. Then more agonising for No. 3, and I didn't bother trying to convince myself he might be a girl ...

Hubby was given "The little Book of Chavs" for Christmas & here's a list of the top Chav names (according to the book).

    Girls:

Beckie, Bianca, Britney ( suprise suprise!) Casey, Cassandra, Caz, Charmaine, Chelsea, Danielle, Diamonique, Donna, Jade, Gemma, Jordan (surely not?!) Syria, Katie, Kylie, Michelle, Missy, Monique, Monneye, Natalie, Nikkie, Rachelle, Samantha, Sharon, Shirley, Stacie, Tammy, Tracie, Trish, Veronique, Vicky.

    Boys:

Aaron, Barry, Brandon, Brooklyn, Corey, darren, Dwayne, Gary, Jason, Kevin, Lance, Larry, Lee, Liam, Nathan, Rickie, Shane, Trevor, Wayne, Will.

Not sure I agree with some of them. Can't see what's particularly chavvy about Will...it's good enough for the Royals! And Leah was my great-grandmother's name ( the whole family had biblical names) so I'm sorry to see that classed as chavvy, but there we go.

Oh yes, forgot to add ( as someone else mentioned) it's always wise to think what the names or initials will spell out or sound like once shortened. A friend of ours has the unfortunate acronym ARS. No personalised number plates for him!
  • Fair point s@sha,

A Mrs P Staines lives in our area. Also there was a Paula Mooney in my year at school. Just shows you need to think about it more deeply than people think.

When my Mrs had our 2nd child in Dec we had this discussion with the couple in the next bed (only the female in the bed literally). I was commenting on a taxi drivers name in our area which is Willie !!!!!!. To which the gent replied, that is almost the same as my name, Billy Dickie. You can't even begin to imagine how much I wished the floor would have opened up and swallowed me. :o

I like the idea of keeping names short to ease their learning. Things like Amy, Eve or Sam would be simple to learn.

    Tic

Ps: I have 2 daughters called Jodie and Carly and a niece called Chloe and nephew Ross. Feel free to use any of these names. :D

    another personal opinion...

I like to give traditional names that are not too unusual but just a little bit different, also I think its nice to have a "Sunday name" that can be shortened in the future if the child wishes . eg Samuel to Sam, Jacob to Jake, Victoria to Vicky etc. You are then giving the child an option to adapt their name as they wish - plus in your wildest dreams if they ever ended up wealthy and famous or were even knighted  - then the name would fit nicely -

    Lady Victoria (yeah :D )

My son has a long name that we have shortened.

He is in reception class and we now have a problem because he can spell the 3 letters long version of his name but is unable to spell the long version and it is frustrating him.

I wish this was something i'd given thought to when naming him.

Chardonnay, Chanel, Lexus, Chantelle-demi, anything else-Demi, Zyvonne, Krystle, Tula, Mercedes, Africa, India, Liberty (sounds awful with our regional accent:()

Blue, Junior, Prince, Kyle, Kane (kayne), Damon, Damien, Guy (pronounced 'gooey' by the PARENTS!) I heard another boy's name recently and i thought 'how awful' but i have forgotten it!!! Clearly it was so awful that i have blanked it from my memory!

my 4 year old niece is elizabeth but we call her Beth, which she is allowed to use at nursery school, only problem is some people insist on calling her Bethany! I was lucky with my name, I use both my middle and first name depending on who I am with! family use my middle name, but people I have known from secondary school onwards and work call me by my first name.

That strikes a chord with me. As you can see by my signature , my name is Jan ( actually spelt Jeanne on my birth certificate , but I prefer to spell it Jan ) and it irritates the hell out of me that people often think my name is Janine , Janet, Jen , Jean or even Jeannie
