Baby names....

Options
My wife is having a caesarean next week and we're almost ready for the baby - except we haven't chosen a name yet! Does anybody know of any (UK) websites of baby names? We've been through loads of books but are still undecided.

and just in case Mr Lewis happens to read this thread - sorry, we've already decided against Martin :p

You could wait until after the birth to make a firm decision. I've known people change their minds because the baby looked like a Fred rather than a Joe. You may have a Martin after all! I think you know when you've found it.

Sorry I don't know any websites, found my first boy's name in a book, possibly even one of the lists at the back of the freebie books from the midwife! (How moneysaving is that!) It leaped out at me as if I'd never seen it before. This despite the fact that we had someone of that name living with us, plus knew several other chaps of that name.

I would say pick something traditional as it's much easier when they start pestering you for personalised pencils, rulers, stickers etc :D

I have a book of 1000 baby names here. If you'd like it, PM me your address and I'll pop it in the post.

I picked my eldest sons name from the book. My youngest son was named by his brother after his favourite engine in Thomas the Tank engine. Thankfully it wasn't Boco or Skarloey :D

You could try the Bounty site on http://www.bounty.com/Baby%5FNames/
their list is up to date and you can type in any name you like and it will tell you how popular it is, which I think is very handy.

Giving your baby a name is the first of many hard decisions you have to make on be half of your new little person. We decided to go for unusual names for our kids, rather than popular , we want our kids to feel their name is just theirs, not theirs , their best friends and the kid next door! We also chose not to give them the name of a grandparent or other passed away relative, partly because we didn't want the new person to feel they had to live up to being similar to their namesake.fashionable names are soon unfashionable.
I enjoyed reading this other thread, it might be worth looking at.Good luck with it all, I hope everything goes well for you all.

Hi plasticman, I had 2 babies last year (mad I know!) one in January called Kai (boy) and one in December called Elina (girl) - I found this decision to be one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make... It took us 2 weeks to decide with Kai and 4 weeks with Elina... Kai was an emergency c-section but Elina was a planned one so we knew when she'd be born too!!

I've deleted all my links as I had loads of sites in my 'favourites' bit basically searched on google and trawled thru sites for hours!!

I dont envy you but what I will say is keep the decison between the two of you as lots of peoples opinions put us off names and uspet things somewhat!

the bounty website has a forum too and everyone really helpful on there so ask the question there, they will have loads of suggestions!!

    Good luck x

p.s. Kai for a boy or Elina for is a good suggestion ;)

I definately stand by waiting until the baby is born before deciding. I wish I hadn't chosen my youngest's name as I don't think it really suits her. It's a lovely name and I really like it....just not for her :(

It's growing on me now but she's 14 months old and for the first 6-8 months I only felt comfortable calling her 'Baby Girl'.

    Congratulations BTW x x x
