Oh, he's stropped at all the new flavours of babyfood I tried today, but ate some little pieces of bread crust! And he's worked out how a cup works, though he pours too fast and soaks himself.0

Re the eczema thing Scott has it too, we were prescribed oilatum bath stuff, steroid cream and an emollient. Hubby used to have it as a child and I did a little so it's a bit
too ! Xx

Good evening all
I have two questions that I'm hoping you lovely ladies will be able to help with: fingerfoods and vitamins.
LO will be 6 months on Sunday - we'll be celebrating with new dummies and her first ever yoghurt... Need to start thinking about fingerfoods, BUT - I'm absolutely terrified of her choking. If anyone can offer some reassurance and/or let me know which foods are the least (or most) likely to lead to her choking I'd be really grateful
Also wondering if anyone with FF babies aged 6 months+ is giving them vitamin drops? My HV said they advise everyone here to start giving them at 6 months, so I dutifully went and bought some. However, the packaging says 'UK Department of Health recommends that all babies aged from six months onwards should be given a supplement that contains vitamins A, C and D. Unless they are drinking 500ml of infant formula a day, as infant formula has vitamins added to it'. NHS website says 'babies who are fed infant formula will not need vitamin drops until they are receiving less than 500ml of infant formula a day'. My LO has 900ml of formula per 24 hours, and the HV knows this, so now I'm confused.
I obviously want to make sure she gets the right nutrition, but I also don't want her to overdose on vitamins, and especially not on things like iron, which I know can cause constipation. What do others do?0 -
Nutella - vitamin drops I thought were just for breastfed not formula fed, I have never given Scott any, will see was others say !
Finger foods we did squishy/stuff that breaks down easily in the mouth eg strawberry. They will gagg but you cant really do anything about that but as they get greater control they get better. My main mistake was to give too much just a little will do.0 -
Hi all,
I've not been on here in a while as we've been having a bit of a tough time. I rang our health visitor today for a chat as I still have some concerns about Theo's development. He's 9 weeks today and he still doesn't look at faces, doesn't follow an object with his eyes and he doesn't smile. If you make a noise he won't turn his head, even though he is startled by loud noises. He's also been incredibly irritable for the last few days - he cries all the time he is awake and just won't settle. I've no idea why as he's never been a big crier up until now.
Anyway, the hv came out to see us and said she can see what I mean and he may have a problem with his vision. We have been referred to the hospital and have an appointment at 9.30 tommorrow to get him checked out. We then have another appointment re his hearing next Tuesday. I'm worried sick. I've been so upset thinking that something is very wrong with my little man. I know it still could turn out to be nothing and he is just a very late developer but I've just had a feeling for ages that something is not right.
As for the crying, the hv was not so helpful. Her advice was to let him cry as picking him up all the time will get him into bad habits. He's 9 weeks old, I refuse to just let him cry and not try and comfort him. The trouble is he doesn't even like being held. The only way I can get him to stop is to hold him upright over my shoulder. Weird.0 -
I don't know about the eyes and ears Eleyn but I will keep my fingers crossed all is well.
The letting him cry thing, I seriously can't believe health professionals are recommending a baby as young as 9 weeks should be left to cry  that boggles belief. If it does get too much for you though, pop him in his basket, go and have a cuppa, he won't go anywhere and sometimes we all need a break, you'l be straight back to him afterwards. A is 9 months old and I still need to do this at times! Sometimes I just pop him in and go out the room, take some deep breathes and go back in. R.e the over the shoulder thing, how is he feeding? My LO had reflux and wouldn't settle on his back at all, if we held him up at our shoulder he'd snuggle right in and go to sleep, it was the only place he got relief. How is he in himself, do you ever hear gurgling or gulpy noises either during feeding or afterwards? Does he have band wind etc?
Hope you're ok lovely, it is so hard at the start, I remember it all too well. We're all here for a moan and support xxThe frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
Elelyn I will be thinking of you - please keep us updated with how he gets on tomorrow.
Re the over the shoulder thing....no reflux here but to this day I do not get cuddles (apart from when I steal them when he's asleep!) ....he wants to be upright, and the higher the better. I think he's just nosy!
As for crying - I am horrified that she said this. Studies have shown that babies of that age who are left to cry can have an elevated cortisol (stress hormone) level up to two weeks later  babies need food, sleep and love - he is too little to be able to manipulate you....he just wants his mummy xx0 -
Elelyn, will be keeping everything crossed for you. Sending you a big ((hug)).0

Elelyn - good luck for tomorrow Hun. I'll be thinking of you both. Xx
Nutella - I've never been told to give vitamin drops (all 3 of my boys were bottle fed) as for finger foods, anything soft is your best bet at first I found Noah gagged on nearly everythingit is difficult at first getting them used to it!! Noah is mainly on purees so I'm sure someone will have more helpful advice for you!

Oooh yes finger foods Nutella, after about 6 or 7 weeks of doing purees we switched to mainly finger foods and the likes, so he'l eat pretty much anything now.
A realllly good thing to start with, although not all that healthy are Organix Carrot Puffs. You get them in single bags, they completely dissolve almost in the mouth, so there is next to no risk of choking.
She will gag to start with, but the sooner you start finger foods the better, as the gag reflex at 6 months is very good, as they get older it gets further and further back. Gagging and choking are very different, gagging, they will cough, make some noises along those lines and then the food normally just appears back in there mouth and they'l be poking it with there tongue. Choking is unresponsive, bugling eyes etc. It it has only happened once here and that was because OH gave him a biscuit in his pram and he wasn't sitting upright properly.
As long as she is sitting up straight, and you are supervising you should be fine. But yes Organix Carrot Puffs, steamed carrot that is soft enough to gum but not soft enough it all just gets squished, fingers are good, so mango/pineapple/melon fingers.
We started like that and now he can eat casserole and stew when I pop it down to himhe even strips the inside of a baked potato out and leaves the skin
they're clever little sods when they want to be. Good Luck xx
