Hi everyone, quick question for anyone who used a TENS... My waters broke at 3am this morning, went to hospital at 8am and got checked over... I'm now back home, and am having irregular period-pain type cramping but not much else. I'm under instructions to ring back at 8pm if things haven't started, with a view to them inducing me... Anyway, my question is, is it worth getting my TENS on asap, even though I'm not having regular contractions, or should I leave it for a bit to see how things progress? Thanks in advance and hopefully I'll be back soon with baby news! :D

  • Morning (afternoon?? :o) all!

Hi 4nnabella! Firstly, HOW EXCITING!!! Secondly, I would say if you can cope with the pains at the moment then leave the TENS off for a bit and then put it on when things start getting a bit stronger. Having said that, I don't know how TENS machines work so I'm happy to be corrected if that advice is rubbish! Sorry...thats not the most helpful I could be...

Lablover - couldn't agree with you more. Thank god for forums like this that highlight the difficulties with breastfeeding because goodness knows the government don't want mums to be fully informed...

No change (or sleep) in our house yet. DH had another lovely nights sleep () but thats probably because I'm so tuned into F now he doesn't have to make a huge amount of noise before I work out what he needs.

He wakes about 5 times a night and will go back to sleep without intervention 3 of those times. The other two I get him up to feed him but he only has a little slurp before he goes back to sleep so I think he's using me as a pacifier. Any advice on breaking this habit?

Thanks for sorting me out with Facebook Kandboys :) xx

Aw Winnie :( I think it's a man thing. MIL always tells me how her hubby would wake up in the morning and say "ooh the boys slept great last night didn't they" meanwhile she's had next to no sleep and been up all night

Would you use a dummy with Finn or is that a route you don't want to go down?

  • Hi Gilly :) I'm not keen to start using a dummy really, Finn's 15 weeks now and I read somewhere that introducing things at this stage can increase the chances of dependancy. Plus he still won't entertain a bottle or anything that isn't either me, his hands or his teddy's ear in his mouth!

Didn't know that about the dependency thing, so good heads up for me :o

I'd put it on now as thats what I did as soon as I started having contractions. You can start on the lower settings and work your way up anyway as the pain gets worse. And don't forget the boost button during the contractions. It takes your body a while to get used to it and for you to feel the benefit so the sooner you put it on the better. Good luck with your labour Annabella, and try and get as much rest now as you can x

  • I *think* it was in the baby whisperer book I've just read. Know I've read somewhere that introducing dummies after 12 weeks can increase chances of dependency. Sure I haven't made it up. God I wish my brain would start working again!!
  • He might just need a quick drink Winnie, or want to be close to mummy for a bit of comfort. Do you dreamfeed him before you go to sleep? He might go a bit longer then and not need one of the get ups. Also when he wakes up, does he cry or just wake up if that makes sense? If he only wakes up and doesn't cry wiould he go back off by himself if you left it 30 seconds or so? Or perhaps he's a bit cold and that's why he's waking?

I second the dependency thing. DS1 can't settle without his thumb and he's 7!! DS2 had a dummy til I was up every 30 mins one night putting it back in - I binned it the next day. Now he relies on a bottle to settle himself. He's 3 - I know bad mother!!!!

Don't have any advice with the TENS but wanted to say good luck 4nnabella!!

Oh and facebookers you are welcome - I'm on there a lot so get used to the systems etc. Bad mummy again!
Thank you to everyone for sharing competitions!

At the moment I go to bed at the same time as F at about 8pm and his first wake up is usually around 10pm so I guess that would be the dreamfeed if I was going to bed at "normal" grown up time! I do let him gribble for a bit before I go to feed him and 3 out of 5 wake ups he will settle himself back down, he very rarely cries in the night, but that might be because I'm getting to him before he gets to that stage. I guess he could be cold, but he's in a 2.5tog grobag and we haven't had any really cold nights down here yet.

I'm almost convinced that once he's in his own room (and used to being in there) the night wakings will stop being such a problem!
