Thank you all for the warm welcome. Feeling a bit despondent (may also be hormonal if my milk is coming in (boobs are rock hard and feel tender so it's possible I suppose, or it could be cos I've been expressing so much today?) as I still couldn't get him to latch properly. Thanks for the tip on lip ties - I've heard of tongue ties, but not lip ties, so will ask about that tomorrow. I only managed to express 5ml at this feed, and he's clearly hungry still as he's rooting wherever he can, and trying to eat his own hand. Moon is holding him at the moment as he settles better with him (think he just associates me with food and the fact that he's not getting what he wants from me), and so I could eat my dessert. I'm hoping to have a bath before bedtime to help soothe my stitches as they're very tender tonight and I've got back ache too. Hopefully things will all seem a bit better in the morning, although I'm feeling a bit desperate at the idea of having to feed him every 2 hours throughout the night too. :( *crosses fingers* I really don't want to give up on breastfeeding as apart from the MSE aspect, my pride won't allow me to stop so I hope all goes better soon.

Sounds like milk coming in to me. I gave up as A wouldn't latch and I pumped for 3 weeks but it was so difficult I couldn't continue, I wish now I hadn't stopped and I'd been more adamant that he be checked for lip/tongue tie. That's me though and I do think everyone has a point where they know it's the right thing to do or bf starts to work for them. If he will latch with the shield I'd do it for now definitely, it'll encourage your milk if anything. Lots of skin to skin now will help, nd if your breasts feel really full maybe hand express a little before a feed just to take the pressure off as it can be hard for the little ones to latch if the breasts are really full. We're all here for you for advice and support xx

  • welcome and congratulations sexymouse and elelyn!

We had a really rough start feeding too. Our LO had a tongue tie so we had problems with latching on and I started expressing and syringe feeding. Unfortunately my milk didn't come in on time and when he was weighed on day 5 it turned out he lost 15% of his birth weight  We were sent straight back to the hospital for two nights where they fed him 87mls of formula every 3 hours. At that time I could only express about 2mls per feed so no wonder my little man got dehydrated. His tongue tie has now been fixed but I haven't managed to keep up my milk supply so am now combination feeding with most of it being formula.

Elelyn - it seems like I've gone through the same so understand how you're feeling. My LO is almost 10 wks old and the guilt is still there although less and less every day as my wee man is doing great. My family is not helping though - they're really into breastfeeding and do not approve of him getting formula. Often when I speak to them there are some comments on how he's not getting the best from me!

    Congratulations sexymouse. :j

Well I'm awake and can't get back to sleep, not because of Noah but our dog keeps whinging downstairs!! I have checked on him 2 times and he is fine and won't go out to the toilet so god only knows what is wrong with him!!
Going to the carboot sale this morning so hopefully I will find some bargains.

Oh and I forgot I was watching a vtech walker that finished on eBay yesterday, it came with the box and was only 20 mins away from me. It went for £7!!! I'm gutted!!

  • Welcome and congratulations to all the new mummies! Pics please :)

    jannine[/B:j hooray on the cotbed!!!!!

sammie boo to eBay...I got a v tech walker a week ago for £4 from a charity shop, might be worth checking a few?

Hope everyone has nice Sunday planned. I'm not doing anything except the usual - look after Reuben and do laundry.

My poor little guy is going bald :( his cradle cap is still lurking around a bit and its started to fall off in big chunks, taking the hair with it. When I get him out of his cot in the morning there'll be a little pile of flakes and hair...both gross and also a bit sad he's losing his lovely hair!

Sunshine - glad Aiden is on the mend :D

Turtlemoose - have you tried the dentinox cradle cap lotion? I used it on Noah and found it fab. His went after a week if using it. I now just use it once a week and normal baby shampoo at other times.

Feeling a lot better now as although we had a very stressful night (my milk is coming in) and I couldn't get J to latch on, the breast feeding support worker (maternity support worker/MSW) came over for a good couple of hours to help me this morning and I feel much better now. I've some techniques and emergency formula milk as a back-up due to J having jaundice. J is completely fast asleep for the first time since having him and the house is so quiet. I'm off to go and join him in bed in a minute, but just wanted to update you all. Thank you for all of the welcomes. xx
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

Glad you are feeling more positive sexy mouse. They say it can take 6 weeks for breast feeding to get established I can't say as I didn't get that far, but I know some of the other ladies here have had a rough ride. Enjoy your nap xx

  • Sexy mouse 16 weeks old and still breastfeeding here. Not without problems I may add. A poorly baby and 10 days on hospital, a tongue tie that didn't get snipped until nearly 4 weeks old...and total lack of support from a nice but totally dim health visitor.

Did you have an epidural during the birth? I ask because it can cause baby to retain fluids, causing an inflated birth weight. Meaning when baby loses weight in the first few days, it can seem more than it actually is because their birth weight wasn't accurate. My baby lost 11.8% and got made to feel like dirt, I had a paediatrician tell me that I was causing my baby to be dehydrated, and that my decision to breastfeed was going to see my baby in intensive care with kidney failure  it meant my baby got given 100ml of formula, before I had the courage to say no and got some decent BFing support. I will always resent that so-called doctor ruining my boy's virgin gut, especially when there was no need. He's had nothing but breastmilk before and since though.

I've since found that out about epidurals and will always wonder if my boy didn't actually lose that much. Just wanted to share so others don't get pressured like I did.

Sammie I've been using olive oil but....I think it's too late to save the hair anyway :( I will get some of that stuff from boots tomorrow, thanks, but I am quite upset with myself I've let it get this far :(
