Our Mamas and Papas and Mothercare I think offer specific rooms for changing/breast feeding. As do the big department stores Debenhams etc.

Most public toilets should also have a baby changing facility, well the ones here do.

For breastfeeding, I imagine it'd be fine to sit in Costa/Starbucks/Local Cafe, half a cup of tea/coffee and breast feed there :)

Kat, I put Katie on the play mat for a bit, she has a bubble tube and mirrors to entertain her, when she starts grouching I put her in the swing chair, then back to the mat where I play with her with her toys, then leave her to to watch the bubble tube again, then pick her up and walk her around the house chatting away to her. If I'm in the kitchen I take her swing seat in and chat away to her about what I am doing. It can be pretty tiring if she is having a grizzly day. Thanks!

Does anyone have any advice about a noisy sleeper? I am really struggling to get some sleep as Katie is just so restless and noisy, she snorts, squeaks, grunts and groans for much of the night. She also seems to get mucus in the back of her nose/throat which I think disturbs her sleep. So I end up getting up with her and holding her upright to drain the mucus away, then I can't get back to sleep.

My Nate is also a noisy sleeper, so we have now put him in his own room/nursery. He has a very good baby monitor, so I am not too worried and now we all sleep better as we were , he snores as do I so I think we were both waking each other up! This may not be what you want to hear tho, I know lots of people are nervous about putting baby in the nursery as you are advised to do so at 6 months, I'm certainly not going to argue with that, this is just what we do.

With the mucus in the nose, can you aspirate it with the nose aspirator thing? Good luck hun

Kat that sleeping bag looks great. Lets them move their arms without getting scratched. Shouldn't have followed the link to Kiddicare as I've now seen some lovely stuff i want to buy!
As for 6 week olds, when they start getting grouchy after 'playing', its probably time for a nap :-) they are too young for toys, they are only interested in being talked to and watching faces, etc.

Yeah I absolutely love this gro-bag - I only wish I had bought more than one, they are now out of stock of the blue ones! Kiddicare is def addictive, sorry!

Thanks for the advice about grouchy play, I do usually pick him up once he gets grouchy as that is what I read in the baby whisperer book, so normally I pick him up and see whats wrong, but usually he goes down for a nap, I was just wondering what people do with their babies when they are just ok, and are not grouchy, coz its hard to play with them at this sort of age, and they can't play by themselves.

    Kira Congratulations:j:j

Can anyone recommen any good toys for a 2week old? Midwife said they do like bright lights. How do you play with your LO when they are still quite young. Midwife said its ok for them to be on there tummy as long as i'm with her. So i'm thinking tummy tme on playmat with maybe a nursery ryhme CD playing in the background?

We had a bit better night, managed about 4hours of broken sleep.

Also, my mum has been a great help and would like to get her a thank you gift. Something she can treasure, i don't mind how much it cost. I don't know wether maybe a massage but then she is very busy with work.

I read in the baby whisperer book that they love straight black lines, and that you should draw some thick black lines on a piece of paper and put them around so they can stare at them, as they get a bit older, wavy and zig zags. They also like black and white things at this age. Also have you tried baby tv on sky? But Kandboys is right that you are the best toy. I sing to Nate, he seems to like it. Remember if you put him down on the playmat, pick him up as soon as he starts being grumpy.

For your mum how about a gift from photobox like a calendar of your little one (they are so much fun to make, assuming you have been taking pics), or a canvas print or something like that.

mirrorimage0 - thanks for adding me to the list, this is also my first baby!

Nice day so far, put Nate down for two naps that did not follow a feed and he soothed himself to sleep :j am still hoping for more sleep through the night but he is still young so am hoping he will get there, I don't mind if it happens slowly just would like to see some progression which I think we are, it does range from 2-4 hour stints, averaging around 3 hours at the moment which is good I think, but then every baby is different.

The same sleeping bags are also sold by amazon if that is of any help to anybody :D They also sell the next size up which are even more fabulous as you can convert the bottom of the bag into legs when LO is mobile

Kat u could tickle their toes, blow raspberries on their tummy, sing silly songs :-) my jacob loved naked time just on his changing mat with a towel under and on top of him. If u have a sling pop them in while you do something and describe what your doing. Hope these are a few ideas for you.

Can u put a couple of towels under babys cot to raise their head up womble? It might make babies breathing easier.

Breastfeeding in public. You can but special covers if you are self conscious laura. Not sure what they are called though. Ive fed jacob everywhere! Had two older ladies come up to me to say how nice it was to see me feeding which was lovely. Been looked at oddly too but its their prob not mine. You have the legal right to feed your baby in any public place up to 6 months and no one has the right to tell you to stop. But ive never had any problems in pubs, cafes, restaurants. Ive even changed jacobs nappy on a pub table outside as i was too lazy to go to the chsnging room!

Most places have a changing station in the toilets and disabled toilets are quite comfy to sit on and feed baby if its a busy, noisy place. Thinking about it the only place i didnt want to feed jacob was in a bowling alley!

    Congrats kira :-)

As already said babies like things that are black and white, so you could draw some shapes on white paper and place them next to her crib / bouncer etc? We bought Katie a light up bubble tube, it changes colour and has 3 little fish floating in it.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cheetah-Mini-Bubble-Tube/dp/B0015NV5EQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1326561246&sr=8-3
If she is placid she can watch it for ages. We also got her a set of rotating disco balls that light up, again she can watch this for ages. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Unbranded-Twin-Disco-Ball/dp/B005BSYWMI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1326561328&sr=8-4

Katie loves mirrors too, so we have some baby friendly mirrors that she kisses when you put right next to her face :D
    http://direct.asda.com/Bright-Starts-Mirror/002668969,default,pd.html

Other than that just talk to LO, even if you read the telephone directory, just chat away, or sing songs / nursery rhymes. Katie frowns when I sing, but then most people do :D Babies don't mind you doing the same thing over and over again, it's just you that will find it repetitive.
My Nate is also a noisy sleeper, so we have now put him in his own room/nursery. With the mucus in the nose, can you aspirate it with the nose aspirator thing? Good luck hun
    Kat x

Kat, that sleeping bag looks great, I'm going to order one for Katie. We are thinking of putting her in her own room when we have sorted out the nose/throat mucus issue. Either that or I am going to sleep in her room!! Does anyone else use a humidifier for their LO? After looking on the internet a lot of sites suggest that mucus could be due to the air being to dry. I think the aspirator would be a short term fix and something we would have to use each night, I was looking for something longer term as this has been an issue since she was born.

Smlsve we have put towels under her mattress to raise the top end, and books under the legs of the frame. If I elevate the top end much more she will be sleeping vertical! We've also tried Karvol capsules sprinkled on a hanky and put next to her crib. We are going to try and dampen the air in our room tonight by putting a bucket of water in the room (as recommended on internet!) I don't know whether to buy a humidifier or whether it would be a waste of £40.

Does anyone else find being on mat leave a bit tedious? Katie is fab, but I'm used to working full time and now I have all this free time that seems to consist of changing nappies, feeding and winding, laundry etc. I thought I'd love not going to work, but I miss the social aspect of it. OH and I have been looking on the internet for some local baby groups for me to join. How does everyone else fill their time?

Kat my little one loves nothign better than having a wriggle on the changing mat or playmat on the floor and watching his brothers or, when they are not there, just taking it all in. Sometimes they just want to lie and chill!

Hi ladies, loving reading this thread and can't wait to join you! i'm 25+1 so a while to go yet.

Just wondered if any of you can give me some advice on which cotbed matress to buy. I've read all the guides on mamas and papas etc but there are so many to choose from and I'm scared of spending a load of money and then not being happy with it. All I know is I want a sprung one and I don't mind paying a bit more for a decent one.
