I'm totally loving the lullaby CD i bought before LO was born, but havent used since she was newly arrived cos it didnt do anything for her. Just tried it again this week as part of bedtime routine, and she seems to be loving it (and zonking out easier!). Sleepytime lullablies - Nicola Kerr.
Today was a record 10 minutes to zonk in crib, with no crying!

Hope everyone is well. Magic sleepy dust to all..

    Hello All

Dizzi - what a awful time you and your baby girl are having. I was on transitional care ward, only for a day and night though - but they werent great with me either, beds werent changed, obs werent done on LO on time and we were discharged 9 hours after we should have been so we were just forgotten really. Once we saw the Paed though, things moved on - so touch wood you get some good care soon.

I cant remember without reading back, but whoever was asking for tips?? I know Ro gave some really good ones, might steal a few myself, but I'll add my pennys worth -

    - Keep a stash of carrier bags upstairs: I normally hook them on the bedroom doorhandle in the morning and fill one with nappys and wipes for the bin, and the other one with bits of washing i.e. pyjamas, muslins and his bath towel etc. Then when you are going downstairs you can just grab them and chuck the dirty one in the bin and the washing one in the kitchen ready for the next load.

    - Totally agree with having some thermos flasks, in the first couple of weeks I filled one up in the morning and then at least I could make a cup of tea in 30 seconds rather than waiting for the kettle etc.

    - Struggling with all the equipment etc, I used to fill LO's moses basket with his bottles from the night etc and carry the basket down first and unload while LO was on a blanket on the floor.

    - Keep a pack of wipes in most rooms if you can. I try and keep one in the lounge, bathroom and bedroom, as I've been caught short in all three rooms!!

    - Agree re handcream, my hands are wrecked from all the washing up :(

    - Try and eat something as early as you can, I know its hard, even now I sometimes dont have anything until 4pm :o but its really not good for us.

I'm sure I've repeated some of the other advice...good luck hun

Day 3 with no transitional worker...

They took the tube out last night but she's running under the amount of food they'll be wanting her to take so I anticipate bad news when the doctors appear on the ward to be honest - re-tubing her is going to kill me if they go down that route.

Dizzi just saw your posts as have been run off my feet the last few days and not had a chance to check forum. I know it is incredibly tough, unbearable even at times having a pre term baby with all the additional support needs that this brings, but please hang in there, it does all get better in the end. Everything you are feeling is totally normal in your situation so please don't let anybody ever tell you different. Ask any friendly staff member what additional support there is in your area, a lot of it is self referral so nobody tells you about it unless you ask.

I know it is not what you want to happen, but if your baby girl needs to be tube fed for a while longer so that she can grow up to be healthy and happy it is a small price to pay.

Speaking from experience here, (my two sons were pre term, oldest 27+1 and youngest 33+2) in a few years time what you are experiencing now will probably be an unpleasant memory, but you won't dwell on it very often as you will be too busy enjoying your daughter.

The care you are receiving is clearly not meeting your current needs and the staff seem quite hostile as well, therefore I would strongly advise contacting the PALS team who will help you make sure that the problems you are experiencing are addressed in a way that you are happy with.

I hope that things improve for you soon.

My iron levels were 13ish during pregnancy then down to 9 after birth. I had the transfusion which left me feeling great for a few hours but it wore off again really fast and when discharged my levels were still only 9.3. But at least I could stand up for a few mins without feeling faint... so they still made me have lots of iron pills!

They said they don't normally do a transfusion at those iron levels, but I was feeling too rough to avoid it :( Kept mentioning the person down the hall whose levels were 7.4 and she hadn't had a transfusion... well that was lovely for her, but it really didn't help me. Though possibly if I'd been fed more than 4 slices of toast in the 36 hours from going into labour (where I couldn't eat) followed by a night on the ward, I might not have been so wobbly. Gah, rubbish hospitals. If I do this again I'll refuse to be transferred after the home birth unless it's a proper emergency.

It's exactly 1 year in our house today, and 3 months after Elliot was born :)

    Hugs Dizzi x
