Just looking for advice from any of the reflux parents....
my son has some reflux/colicky symptoms, but they're not constant, we have some days where he is absolutely fine, and other days when we're swimming in sick. In the few days up to yesterday, he's gone through every outfit he owns, I had to raid the 3-6 month stuff for vests. I put his last clean outfit on at 9am ready for his 6 week check, he was still wearing it this evening with not a mark on it.
I described some of his symptoms to the health visitor, sick, stop/start feeding, coughing/gagging sometimes, looking like he is chewing, and they said it might be a bit of reflux. If it was though, wouldn't he have it all the time? Also, he's fairly good natured, he doesn't scream endlessly, though we get some rather pained squeals/whimpers sometimes. And is gaining weight well.
Also, he gets very uncomfortable wind, which seems to go with the sickiness. I was advised to try Infacol to see if it helps. Anyone using it, if you have a baby who likes to feed for hours, do you just give it at the start of feeds, or after a while do you give more?
He weighed 11 pounds 12 1/2, no wonder we're starting to get some leaks with the size 2 nappies now!0 -
It's silent reflux my LO has been diagnosed with Aimless, so he isn't sick, but I know with the reflux that includes sickness, generally they won't gain weight great.
Will he settle on his back or does he find it hard to settle anywhere else but your chest?
I find Infacol ok, I've been using it since Aaron was 3 days old though so I'm loathe to stop it now, as it does take quite a few days to get into their little systems. I would give it at the start of a feed and if you've burped him and you think it's all came up and he wants to feed again then I'd give more. All Infacol does it join all the little bubbles together, to form a large bubble so they can get it outIf it's bottom wind he has I'd recommend Colief, it really has helped our little man get his bottom wind out, in fact he'l trump away now with no sign of pain or being uncomfortable.
If you do suspect reflux of any sort, go to your GP, if I hadn't I'd be sitting at the moment with a screaming baby, and me in tears too probably, and after less than 12 hours on the meds we were given, he is a lot more settled, and I'm hoping it gets better and better.
I'm not sure about having it all the time, as the one thing that put me off thinking it was reflux was the fact our baby would take some feeds without any symptoms, but then thinking back he still wouldn't settle on his back at all, even if he was sleeping and then we put him in his crib/pram he'd wake up almost instantly. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
When he has it and is unsettled, he wakes when I move him... but I usually feed him on a pillow, and I can slide it onto the bed and he'll sleep lying flat on it. So I think it is the movement/absence of body contact that wakes him rather than lying flat? When he's settled he'll sleep in his bed for a few hours at a time quite happily. Also, even if he's unsettled in his crib, sometimes he'll nod off again with a hand on his tummy.
He's gaining over a pound a fortnight at the moment, even with the sickiness. Maybe because once it is out, he demands refilling again.
He never seemed to have much top end wind, maybe the Infacol will shift some upwards and there'll be less to go bottomwards!
As I say, we don't get much screaming, it's more that he's restless and wakes really easily, plus I don't want to move him/leave him alone in case he's sick. They did say I could come back for Gaviscon if he didn't improve, but not sure it is really needed?
On another note, do other people's health visitors seem really surprised/disappointed when you say you are doing fine?Because baby one was a constant screamer, even being showered in sick seems easier.
And now we've got loads of smiles...!

I just wanted to say thank you to everybody who wished my older son well. Sorry I have not managed to do this earlier but life got in the way a bit. He was operated on in the early hours of the next morning following being taken to hospital, and ever since there have just not been enough hours in the day to fit in everything that needs to be done as my DH is still away. He is recovering well now and is loving the 6 weeks off from school that he has been given, though not doing so great dealing with the likelihood that his beloved football will be a thing of the past.
My daughter is back to complete food refusal and is surviving on 25oz of formula per day. Though she continues to grow at the top end of the charts which is a bit of a mystery? She has also cut four teeth since I was last here too which just added to the stress levels.
My younger son is still struggling badly with acid reflux too. He had just about completely stopped eating and was constantly ill before he managed to get a proper diagnosis at age 3. I am trying to gradually remove his fear of food and get him eating again which is proving to be a very long and slow process.
I am now going to go and read back through the thread to catch up on how everybody is doing. I hope you are all keeping well though.0 -

Your LO's symptoms sound exactly like my DD's - irregular vomiting, stop/start feeding, coughing/gagging, looking like she is chewing something. We were given infant Gaviscon by the GP and I am not sure if it is helping. When your LO is sick does it have a phlegmy consistency?0 -
If its bottom wind aimless i wouldnt use infacol, apparently it can force it down and make the bottom wind worse. Id try colief xThe frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0

We have a variety, mainly either fresh milk or curdled looking milk though. Not sure if we've had a phlegmy one, though we did have a thicker yellowy looking one? I'm usually just busy scrubbing it off my last clean pair of jeans and don't pay much attention.
One thing I did wonder is if it was because I have a lot of milk, but he slept a lot this afternoon meaning half of this evening's feeds were jet propelled, but they stayed down.
I did pick up a good bit of advice earlier while googling. He quite often would bring up milk while I was attending to his bum, especially if it was taking a bit of cleaning up. What hadn't occurred to me was I was holding his feet and tipping him up, particularly if it was all up his back. So now I'm trying to roll him more than I lift him.
He's asleep in his bed, I'd better get in mine quick! His 'long' sleeps haven't been that long lately.

Jenjade I hope everything is going well for Ellie.
Gilly please dont think twice about having anything prescribed for your little boy. You and your OH have made regular national insurance contributions throughout your working lives and you are now simply utilizing them.Glad the GP was sympathetic that you saw. Also my baby girl has never produced a frothy poo ever, slimy, mucousy diarrhea in abundance though.
Aimless my daughter has never actually cried yet, (and I sometimes worry that she is actually able to) but has been diagnosed with both reflux and dairy intolerance. She had the same symptoms as your son.0 -
best advice I was ever given regarding reflux was to keep my daughter totally upright for half an hour after feeding her. I also keep the head end of her bed constantly elevated as it works wonders on the coughing and choking through the night.0
