Toniq, (date buddy :p ) so good to see you here, obviously we all want to see you here and it's great for helping each other out with tips :D Glad Jessica is gaining, our wee man is demand feeding too, sometimes it's every 3 hours, but sometimes only 2. He's a wee greedy.

Hi Mummies, hope you and babies are all doing well. Just thinking about what formula to buy as a back up to breastfeeding and wondered if any of you could offer some advice please?

I didn't buy any. If I had, I wouldn't still be breastfeeding today. Unless you live in the sticks there are always supermarkets/petrol stations open 24/7 where you can buy emergency formula.

See I wasn't going to buy any either, but then I'm so glad I did, as Aaron went 10 hours without a feed  could not get him to latch on, he was screaming and screaming, and no matter how hard I tried he wouldn't feed and by this point I don't think me or OH would have wanted to go traipsing to Asda or Tesco. I used one little carton, and started back on breast milk straight away afterwards.

Maybe make the decision based on your husband then and how determined you are to BF. Mines the type that doesn't mind popping out for shopping/takeaways no matter the time! He was almost out the door at Midnight to buy formula when I was struggling on day 4. I had to stop him! I just think if it'd been in the house I would have used it, and more than likely quit.

  • I went to Starbucks today, but I chickened out of breastfeeding and went and bought the pre done bottle pack. Maybe new time I will feel a bit braver. Anyone got any advice on how to manage it?

I was determined and even now have the most incredible guilt that I can only give my son half and half. Even when advised by the doctors in hospital to top him up with formula I refused, which looking back was incredibly stupid and probably caused the lack of feeding for 10 hours.

My OH would have went, but after the day we had and we 'd almost convinced ourselves we'd have to take Aaron back to hospital, like we'd been warned to if he wasn't feeding, I'm glad we had the option to just nip to the cupboard. I realise it's not for everyone and I myself hadn't wanted to buy any as I looked at it in the same way, it'd be easier to give up, but at the last minute decided to buy 2 wee cartons on the advice of a breast feeding mother.
