Advice please, Aaron isn't going to the toilet as often as I'd think he should be, we're bicycling his legs and massaging his tummy as often as we can. He doesn't seem to be in loads of pain, but is straining quite a bit. We're also doing the vaseline around his bum and cooled boiled water as per the midwives instructions.

When he does go, his poos are soft and yellow (like the should be apparently) we did try the orange juice in the cooled boiled water last week and it worked but my God it was like an explosion and I think that must be sore on his wee bum, so don't want to be doing that all the time. We've just given him some more tonight so we can see how it goes. If it wasn't for the straining I probably wouldn't bother as he may not be as frequent as other babies.

  • breast or bottle fed hun and how old, the pooing pattern can change quite quickly and some babies can go every 5 days or so. samuel did his for a few weeks, and had explosions.
if he isnt in pain then dont worry too much, just try massage and bycicle legs.

breast and bottle, about 50/50 I'd say. Maybe 60/40 sometimes. He's 10 days old.

Gilly, I was googling earlier as I've had a whole day of wind and grumbling every time he poos. I think it said it's quite common for babies to cry when they poo, and to have less poos than you expect. As long as what they produce is soft they're not constipated.

Every time I get him to sleep, he wakes himself up farting or pooing. Think it's something I ate, as he's not normally this restless for this long?

See mine is always farting away, constantly, and last night screamed for hours and hours, and it seemed like he was in pain and trying to poo, but it disappeared as quick as it came and still no poo, so I really don't know. We've given him the orange tonight, so will see how it goes :o

When he does go though, its soft.

At night i've been letting DD wake up for a feed and she does usually wake up 5/6 hours later but last night she didn't wake up and it had been 7 1/2 hours so i felt bad and picked her up out of the moses baskets and did dreamfeed her and she only had a 5min feed and went back to sleep. Last night she slept from 10 until 7.30:) i still feel tired tho!

I expressed for the first time this morning, Managed 1 1/2 oz. Whats the best way to warm the bottle up?
  • Gilly, watch what you eat. I heard that breast feeding Mums should avoid onions, orange juice, currys, chocolate, basically all food that gives you gas as baby will not tolerate it. You probably know that already but I thought I'd mention it just in case :)

I've been heating the milk by putting the bottle in half a cup of boiling water for a minute or so, little amounts heat really quickly so check it (after swirling not shaking as it get lots of bubbles in it).

It is hard not to panic when the baby sleeps from 1-7.30am, but for two days in a row, it might be a pattern.

Gilly that sounds more like a griping pain than toiletry... Rose acts like that when she needs winded.
