fluff, oh thought also there might be a sensory/motor issue, he really gets worried about everything then i get worried.

I guess with having a severely autistic nephew, your OH will worry about whether he can see problems in his own kids. Is there anything that helps to put his mind at rest? I'm a worrier too. Luckily my brother's a paediatrician so I'm forever phoning him for reassurance :D

I'm really intrigued about this book. I heard about it on R4 a few weeks ago and I was thinking about getting a copy for my pregnant friend (and sneaking a peek myself) as I'm a massive New Scientist reader. Just had a look and it covers the first year of babyhood too. Me want :D

Newborns often look around your face anyway. They look at your hairline and your mouth a lot rather than your eyes, so you can't trust eye contact as an indicator of a social development disorder.

It's natural to worry about your baby. I went through a period of thinking Freddie was autistic. Now I just think he's an idiot :D

  • Just popped in to check on Erin and she's flat out on her front but with her head smooshed almost flat into the mattress (slightly resting on her hands but not much) - rolled her back over as I'm terrified of her suffocating like that and she didn't have her head turned to the side at all... now I'm going to be worrying all night ain't I - she's never ever front-slept before.

Freddie did it for the first time the other morning! He was lying on his arm and I was convinced he'd end up with gangrene.

If Erin can roll over both ways (which she obviously can) then the advice is that it doesn't matter if they start sleeping on their fronts. She'll be fine. Difficult not to worry, I know, but she got herself in that position. She can get herself out if need be.

  • She gets kind of stuck with the sleeping bag factor a bit (although she can do a 180 degree turn and then roll over in it so much be relatively OK on it all). Think I'll finally remove her flat-head pillow when I go back upstairs (she's so mobile now she's never on her back for more than about a second before rolling off somewhere else) just so it's not something for her to get her face smooshed up against overnight.

Worrying more since her breathing's not fantastic cos the cold is back for round 2 I guess.

he'd slap himself repeatedly in the face
Oh yes, this.... 8 weeks here and he's still not learnt not to do this, he also enjoys trying to gouge his eyes out. Lately he's realised that one hand can touch another hand, so he's twiddling his thumbs....
I was amazed how mine stretches when he wakes up - just like a full grown person :)
Newborns are generally useless. Better once they start smiling. Then you end up spending all their waking hours cooing back at them and smiling back at them :o

Thanks for the book link Fluff - my library has it so I've reserved it :)
As for the eye contact thing, even at 8 weeks if it's not when *he* wants to look at you he won't - don't get me wrong we have more and more periods where he just wants to gaze into your eyes and coo at you, but if he doesn't want to do that he will actively ignore you and turn away. At first we had about an hour every morning of what I called 'interactive baby' - this wasn't right away at newborn stage though, only later - when he would respond to a smile or something and actually look at you (rest of the time asleep/eating or staring into space when awake, which was probably about 2 hours at first).
  • I always loved the look of utter indignation when they smacked themselves on the head and were so cross trying to figure out who'd just done that.
