We're both doing good but I am struggling a bit with BF. Is anyone BF and expressing?? If yes can you give me any advice how start off as the midwive's don't really encourage it?? Just finding the demand quite hard at the mo and have been quite tearful.

Kimmy ask your MW or HV to put you in touch with the local breast feeding support worker, there should be one in every area. Mine came out to see me and gave me lots of useful advice, but unfortunately LO didn't take to BF, it was too much hard work for her. So the support worker loaned me a pump to try and express and gave me lots of advice on that too. I've found they are very keen for you to express if you can't BF.

11lb 2oz? is that a record for the forum?

Welcome kazzy :) My wee fella is 3 1/2 months and I think I'm going to start weaning when he hits 4 months. So I'm curious to see what advice you get. I can't up the volume of milk much more with Daniel (it's 8 oz of hungry baby milk). Just about to do a dream feed to 'try' and keep him going 6 hours at night without a bottle.

Great to see so many mums joining the thread. Thanks again Kira

Lol! It was a bit of a shock for me to, I was told the week before I had him that the estimated birth weight was 8lb 3oz! I was 8 days over and had a normal delivery with only gas and air too lol! Think I was better off not knowing the actual weight though! Im not diabetic or anything and was a normal size 14 so I have no idea what happened, my bump was huge though! Im just worried if I have anymore because they are meant to get bigger!!

Hiya Dee. Welcome! Your DD is just a week older than my DS. He's not a great sleeper either as he is either hungry or windy!

Kazzy I think ignorance is bliss sometimes! I remember with DD at a 35 week scan being told the head was 9cm :( I wonder if they do it deliberately to get a reaction :D

Morning all. Jacob slept 10.30-7 then went straight back down to sleep after his feed :j! Am sure it won't last so am enjoying it while I can. Problem is DS2 keeps getting up during the night :( so we're still losing sleep.

emmylou - sounds like you may have a big one in there cooking!

Nice to see you Wonder Womble!

kazzybabes - welcome and what a weight! i thought my LO was big! Well done you on having him naturally. I don't blame you weaning him early. Mine were all early weaners at about 18 -19 weeks. Anything from 17 weeks is considered ok isn't it. I used to give them a little milk first to take away the hunger then start with the solids. That way they are not so frantic. They can finish bottle/breast feed after the solid food then. I didn't bother with the baby rice last time and went straight to the packet cereals you make up with milk. They are much more yummy than horrible rice lol!!

Congrats and welcome to all the other mummies x

kimmymark, congrats on little one. x
breast feeding you will get loads of different advice from different sources but the main thing is to relax and not stress, (easier said the done)

most midwives will tell you not to express until feeding is established but i expressed from 2 weeks with all 3 of mine and it worked well. i wouldnt bother with a manuel pump as it makes it so much harder, defdinatley lend or buy an electric pump, even if you dont want to bottle feed at the moment with the breast milk you can always freeze it to use later

  • Morning everyone & thank you for the welcome comments.
I can't get over how amazing this experience of having a little one is - I feel truly blessed. I can't stop staring at her and being sooo excited everytime I see her face.
Was going to go out to mothercare today for a few bits but I feel very tired today and the weather here is rubbish. Decided to stay in and have lots of sleeps and cuddles with Evangeline instead - which sounds like more fun anyway.
Hope everyone has a good day today whatever your plans xx

    Morning all,

Kazzybabe - i have the opposite problem with Poppy,I started weaning her at 4 months and 4 months later she still hardy eats anything. She is gaining well though so HV isn't worried. I agree with Kandboys maybe give a bit of bottle first so he isn't really hungry.

Kimmy - definately worth trying expressing. I know how tiring the constant feeding is and how painful to start with so well done for trying to find a way to help. I expressed and gave a couple of bottles before the six weeks you are supposed to but she later on refused bottles but the feeding is so much easier and quicker now.

My night wasn't too bad. Poppy moved into her own room two days ago and i am slowly trying to wean her off night feeds and also trying to get her to self settle. She wasn't too bad and managed a couple of stretches of 3 hours (a lot better than the 1-2 hours she has been doing recently).
