I have to agree with Gilly, i'd definitely press the matter if you're still concerned. Charlie is also so much better since being put on Aptimal Pepti after finally seeing a pediatrician. And that is after us pretty much demanding it too from the doctor xDFD February 2012

Thanks Gillyx and mozzyc, I did mention to him the silent reflux when I was there, to which he said that if it was reflux, the Gaviscon should help. Do those thickeners and thickened formula cause constipation? I already bought the Comfort milk, I'll give it a go first since it's already here, but I did not want to go into colief so quickly, everybody says there's no side effects but idk, I guess it's the thought of it as a medicine, I rather try first other options. I also read ranitidine (also medicine, though) neutralizes the acid in the stomach.

No they don't. The thickener I use (and still use) is Carobel, it is made from carob bean, all natural
The stay down milks aren't thicker, they thicken in the stomach, to stop it coming back up, but they shouldn't cause constipation. Comfort milk will probably do the opposite, we had shrek coloured sticky poops on that, but it's apparently normal, so if that happens don't fear
Go back to another GP, saying oh gaviscon should sort it, it doesn't always. Randitidine should be the next step, if it doesn't work it should be a referral to the hospital, to start looking at diet, omeprazole and domperidone.
I know I sound really harsh here, and feel like I'm being pushy, but there will be something, to maybe not take away completely but it will ease whatever it is that's wrong with her. I have been there with a baby who was in constant pain and people telling me there was nothing wrong when I knew there was.
Gaviscon will constipate, definitely. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
I would def go back to your GP. Aiden had colic and acid reflux.
On the flip side, just because something didnt work for one baby doesnt mean it wont work for anyone else. Gaviscon worked wonders for Aiden, and definately didnt constipate him, he was on it for 6months. Whilst I appreciate it wont work for all, it did for us-with no nasty side effects.
So snowy here! Id say we have a good 4inches

Gaviscon has high levels of salt, which imo is a reason it shouldn't be given out willy nilly as when weaning comes, you have to be so careful with food. It's the cheapest medication they can give, and imo isn't properly controlled, it seems to be given to babies who may not even have reflux, there aren't proper procedures in place, it's just given to the mother, here take this. In my experience anyway. If your baby doesn't take the recommended ounces, they may not get a full dose etc.
It's the minority it works for in my experience and the ones who it did work for were on lactulose and prunes but it could just be the people I spoke to had pretty severe refluxbut if it isn't working do go back.

Maybe so, but it was prescribed for me by the gp and I trusted what he told and gave us. I dont think I was wrong to give it him, and it made him better - which is only a good thing in my eyes. By the time we weaned we were on 3 bottles a day and after 2 weeks of weaning came off Gaviscon so I dont think it harmed him.
Maybe he didnt have reflux as bad as others but I certainly dont think it should be dismissed before being given a try.
Aidens turned out fine anyway

I'm not dismissing it at all, but venture onto any manner of reflux forums anywhere on google and you will get it time and time again about how it didn't work.
I was bordering on PND before getting A sorted and I'd hate to think of anyone sitting there in the same situation as me, being dismissed by a GP as "not having reflux and if it is the gaviscon will work" which is what Marta has been told, and that is simply not true. I appreciate it does work for some but for others it doesn't and it's not the end of the road. If you were told the above by your GP and the gaviscon hadn't worked for you, you'd be at a complete loss and apprehensive about going back, which is all I said. If it doesn't go back.
At one point we were on, omeprazole and domperidone and it still didn't work for us, despite being told it was the end of the line. I was at breaking point and if I can help anyone who feels the same I will try to.The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
Of course. I just wanted too add my view, that he cant be the only one it worked for.
I may have been lucky and had a good gp. He told us all the different options we could try, but started us on gaviscon. So I knew if it didnt work I could go back for something else.
Anyway, whatever does end up working - hope you can get it sorted in the endx

I just don't want anyone to suffer the way we did, I struggled to bond with my own son because of what we went through. I appreciate our case was completely different as there was a cause of the reflux but it was such a horrible time in our lives and I know just how dismissive some GP's can be
especially as the cost of the treatment goes up x
